New owner needs help Hello everybody I'm new to the forum & a first time owner as we'll. I was hoping I could get a little help with some questions I have. My puppy is an 8 week old male. I don't really feel comfortable with crate training since I have to work from 6-430 mon-thurs. and my fiancé works 8-5 so he would be in a crate for a long time each day. Currently I keep him puppy gated in the small hallway that connects my bedroom and the kitchen. It measures to be 3.5 feet by 5.5 feet. I was wondering if this was enough room for the little tyke. I put his bed toys food water and puppy pads in with him. He does really good with the pads when we are home. Has his slip ups but that's on us for not watching him close enough. He goes on the pads some when he is alone all day but today I came home to find the pads turned over and his bed dragged on top of them. Is there any advice that can be given on how to potty train for somebody that works all day? I know it will take some time I just want to make sure I'm doing it right. And he sleeps with me at night and holds everything all night until about 430 when I get up. Any advice would be appreciated |
✿´¯`*•.¸¸✿ Hello :wavey: ✿´¯`*•.¸¸✿ ✿´¯`*•.¸¸✿ :welcome4: to YorkieTalk ✿´¯`*•.¸¸✿ First I usually use and expen to keep him in. I got the iris expen 4 panel with extra two panels. It is 36" x 72" "Yorkies For Dummies" is the first one I recommend."Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second book. These are excellent resource books. Another book "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak. This gives you help in potty training for working people and stay at home. . . Very helpful ! Here is the pen ![]() 2 extra panels ![]() The book. . It is only $4.65 ![]() I hope this helps. . . This helped me so much |
Welcome to this great forum....you will be presented with much opportunity to learn sooooo much about every aspect of the care and nurturing and training of your baby! I agree with the books named by "Verbena"....these are also my very favorites and I have been recommending them to all my new owners for many years. Your hallway set up should be fine as far as size and area is concerned. I also like x-pens for puppies, simply because I have had babies amuse themselves by tearing the wll paper off my bathroom wall, scratching and clawing on the sheetrock, chewing on the baseboards, and when confined to the kitchen, were diligent about chewing up my custom made cabinets! Keeping them in an x-pen, positioned away from walls and cabinets and baseboards, prevents some of these disappointments and expenses of a baby amusing themselves for a period of time! Congratulations on your baby! |
Congrats! and another book recommendation Our Shelby is 10 months today! - And she is our first dog/ yorkie - aside from great advice from her breeder Susan, her trainer, experienced friends and, of course, YorkieTalk, I found this book to be very helpful ![]() It only came out last year - (we found it while browsing at a bookstore) and we've found it to be very useful to understand what Shelby is going through as she goes through puppyhood. Gives a ton of great tips throughout, too. Good luck with the pup! Alec |
