11 month-old Yorkie getting aggressive with "sister" and owners Really would appreciate advice. We've had our Yorkie puppy since she was 7 weeks (now 11 months). She has been spayed and according to the vet, is very healthy. I'm wondering if she is exhibiting alpha behavior with our other dog, a 3-year old Yorkie. Both dogs sleep on our bed, but the puppy is now barking and lunging when the 3-year old gets near her on the bed or if the 3-year old comes near us humans when the puppy is lying next to us on the sofa. She has also growled and lunged at US if we disturb her when she's sleeping. In all other aspects, she is a sweet, loving little girl--she likes other dogs, strangers, children, etc. What is the best way to stop this behavior? |
I would get a trainer ASAP. She may be 'testing her limits' as to what she can get away with. Basic obedience and some structured training could help. In the mean time if she is attacking when near you say no sternly and get up and leave. She needs to learn you don't want her to 'protect' you. |
Get a trainer and follow through. You don't want her growling at your older pup or you. You could try putting the puppy on the floor and telling her "No", when she does this when the older dog is lying next to you or trying to get on the bed. Definitely get a trainer. |
If you are still having this problem, perhaps make her sleep on the floor and don't allow her on the couch until she stops this behavior. This puts her in a less dominant position and she should begin to act accordingly. |
