Was wondering why?? I can call my girl off a black bear, early this fall, or a squirrel, today, or the bull Moose on Thursday. With deer she see them and just looks at and leaves alone. But she goes crazy over any other dogs and calling her off is impossible. She goes from mild manner to a monster child in seconds. I know it is aggression but one wonders why she not crazy with things she never seen before like a moose or a bear. She took one look at the moose popping out of the ditch on Thursday and she was more interested in the border collie that was chasing it. Once she saw the moose clearly she was on my leg, up in my arms and not a peep. If it been just the collie she be growling and huffing away. With the bear she looked at it and she looked at me and went nope I am coming Mum. Joy |
My dog has loved any dog that visited -- but hasn't seen any outside yet. He did, however, meet the horses in the back pasture. He was out there near them for quite a while before he even noticed them. They weren't moving much, and they are so big - I'm not sure he realized that they were alive. Then he did see them - barked a couple of times and backed up toward me. He was a only a little frightened of them. On the other hand, my other dog met them when she was about 4 months old and 12 pounds. And she took out after them and had them running all over the pasture. She thought this was great fun. Scared me - of course. It amazes me that they ran from her. Dogs are different! Carol Jean |

This one grunted a warming that was not needed as we had yet to see him. He could have just left and we would never had know. Trust me we stayed close to home till freeze up. He is only around in the fall. Moose is a little more scary then tend to be just plan mean and unpredictable. Now that we know that he is around will be watching the ditches. They tend to hide out in the day time. If the border collie had not bugged him he have not moved from his spot till he were well gone. We are always careful. Bear bangers always carried and recall on kids and dogs are not an option were I live. Come and come now means do it and no back chat. Joy |
What is a bear banger?Just curious.... |
Bear banger is a pen like object in size. It was a trigger and on the end of it is larger cap that is filled with I assume gun powder. When you pull the trigger it makes a loud sound and hopeful scares the bear. Pepper spray is the other thing you can carry but that with kids is putting you to close to the bear to use safely. This hopefully stops the bear long enough to clear the kids out. Joy |
