My current reading material Besides Little Dogs, Training your pint size companion. I just picked up Canine Body Language. A photographic Guide, Interpreting the Native Language of the Domestic Dog. by Brenda Aloff. I got 369 pages to get read by next Saturday, when I see Brenda at a training seminar with my girl as a session dog and me learning too. I have had it on order since before christmas but it came just this Thursday. Anyone read this one as I like to see what your thoughts are. Joy |
Joy. You are a wealth of information on books to read!! I think you should give us all a book report posted here after you read this one! Sounds very interesting...tell us how your training goes Sat. :) . |
I am flying my girl out on Friday the 13th and I am back on the 16 th. We train with 7 other mid to hugh aggressive dogs for 8 hours on the 14 and the 15th. She is the smallest one in the class at 8 poundsish My girl is cranky with other big cranky dogs so I am taking her in among them in a controlled and trained setting with muzzles. We will be working at her pace so if she wants in among them or to stay on the outer edge in a corner it will be up to her. Joy |
Good luck with the training, Joy! Let us know how it goes. I haven't read the book you are reading, but I will take this opportunity to recommend a couple of good books that I've read recently: Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson The Complete Idiots Guide to Positive Training by Pamela Dennison Next up: Bones Would Rain from the Sky by Suzanne Clotheir |

I got one you might like after bones. Dominance Theroy and Dogs James O'Heare. it is all of 43 pages long if you read all the reseach he read that is listed. you can get I think at dog wise. Fron a book that is emoitonal to one strat up science and both are saying the same thing. I have read Culture Clash as well not bad I read another one of hers Fight, but not The complete Idiots Guide to postive Training. What you think of that one? Joy |
Joy, I thought the Complete Idiot's Guide was a very good introduction, but probably a bit basic for you. I'll order Dominance Theory. It sounds good! Thanks. |
Thank you ladies, you have just added 2 new books for me to read. :D Bones Would Rain from the Sky Dominance Theroy and Dogs James O'Heare I have read the other 2... Joy, I can't wait to hear how your trip goes. |
Click for Joy! Joy... A big thank you! I am loving "Click for Joy!" I can't put it down... I fell asleep last night reading it! lol Tons of great information and for anyone with questions about Clicker training... the information is simple and very clear while being right on and in depth all at the same time! Its written in a question and answer format, you can read it page by page, which I am doing, or you can skip around and get answers to YOUR questions first! It has a great index to search by. It is written as a resource for Clicker trainers, and provides answers to over 100 commenly asked questions in class... if you are taking a class or teaching a class, the answers are right at your finger tips. I like that the writer has a sense of humor while holding steadfast to what is known to work. I am enjoying every page and I find myself saying out loud "thats right!" while I am reading... And laughing out loud, both of which have earned me a few raised eyebrows in public.... I read anywhere I can! If you are looking to clicker train, I think this would be a valuable addition to your library! Thanks again Joy for the recomendation |
Kathryn The questions in Click for Joy come from members at Clicker Solution and written like I would answer one of your questions here. As these guys talk and train Clicker 24/7 and talk with the developer of clicker, they get the best understanding and are able to keep it simple and fun. I am glad that you are enjoying that book. I liked it for the same reasons. All the questions and concerns I had over clicker where answered so I could understand. I am still in the baby stages of clicker. My timing still needs a tons of work. Your welcome I love to help. Joy |
i've been looking for Dog Language: An Encyclopedia of Canine Behavior in local bookstores but have not been able to find it. i guess it's amazon.com here i come! recently, i bought The Dog's Mind: Understanding Your Dog's Behavior. it was informative, but since it was published over 10years ago, some of the basic science concepts are outdated. Click for Joy sounds interesting. i'll have to look into that one. thanks! |
