Adopting older yorkie--training questions! So I am adopting an 11 month female yorkie (named her Wednesday)... Anyways, I am concerned about the best way to potty train her. According to her current owner-she does not use pee pee pads now and they have been working on doing outside. However, they live on a large farm and I live in a townhouse. We have a back deck and a small front yard area. I am struggling with whether to peepee pad train her or not. Can this be difficult because she is almost a year? Has anyone tried litter box training their yorkie? HELP! :animal36 |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on your new pup! I brought Teddy home when he was 8 months old and he was strictly outdoor trained. I re-trained him to use pads as well. Peeing on the pad he took to naturally, but he did not want to poop indoors. I had to corral him using baby gates in a smallish area with several pads lined up. Honestly, it was a sad exercise because he was so desperate to go outdoors to do his business. When he finally couldn't wait any longer, he did it. I praised him profusely, gave him a treat, and disposed of the pad immediately. When he saw how happy I was and that I cleaned up right away, then he was willing to keep doing it. Admittedly, I had the advantage of having another Yorkie in the house to set an example for Teddy. Here is my blog post with more tips that may help you: Potty Training Small Dogs - Dog Life and Style There are some people who use litter boxes, but I worry about the dogs potentially eating the litter. Pads are a more popular option. |
I also love the name Wednesday that you chose. :) |
Congrat's on your new addition,Wednesday is an unusal and beautiful name. She's not to old to change her potting habit's. If you can I would let her do both piddle pad and out door's. Some people put the pad in the litter box and that work's well for them, I'm sure in no time you will have many more suggestion's. This is a wonderful forum to belong to, very many useful knowledge and many helpful people, By the way welcome to yorkie talk, glad to have you aboard. Anne/Luci |
