Tips on using a bell to go outside I have 2 dogs that I am wanting to train to use a bell to let me know they need to go outside to potty. Does anyone have any tips on how to do this? Everything I have watched and read is very helpful, but it is how to train 1 dog. Any help in training them to do this is much appreciated. Whether it is how you did it with one or more doggies. :) Thanks. |
I trained Abby to ring bells by playing with 2 large sized ( tied together) christmas bells on the floor. Every time she touched them I gave her a tiny treat. We played for 5 minutes a few times a day. Then I thumbtacked them to the baseboard by the garage door and every time she touched them I treated her. Then I started opening the door at the same time. She ran out of course! It was a pain for awhile because she was a puppy and loved to run outside. But after awhile the newness wore out and now she kicks the little bells when she needs to go out. One step at a time and do it when they are young. We tried the big bells strung to the doorknob but she was afraid of them overhead. |
I use a little bell tied to a shoestring and hang it on the doorknob. The way I have trained my little ones was first to just ring the bell when I took them out. After a few days of that I would tell them to ask to go potty and get them to hit the bell (usually picking up a paw and gently touching the bell). Give them a treat after. Then after several days I would encourage them to hit it on their own and give a treat. If they don't hit it after one or two requests then again getting them to hit it by taking their paw then praise. I found one of my little ones picked it up and used it on her own to ask within a few days. The newest puppy just started ringing it on his own and its been several weeks. |
