Drop it/stop stealing Lola has gotten better with the stealing, but it's still a daily struggle. Luckily it's usually just paper or socks, so they won't hurt her. She will steal anything though, including bits of hair she finds on the floor. She's gotten very good at listening to leave it, but that only works if I catch her before she has something. I'm not sure how to teach drop it, I've tried using 2 toys, but she won't reliably drop toy1 for toy2. She'll usually try to get both, runs away with toy1 then comes back for toy2, or ignores toy2. If I have food she's not interested in toys. When she has things she's not supposed to have she'll either run under the table with it or shows it to me to get a treat. She knows what she's allowed to have and what she isn't. The rule is no chasing when she has something, so we have to lure her out with high value food. I try to teach her drop it while getting the item, but it's hard to catch the right moment and I frequently have to take it out of her mouth. |
I had that problem with Joel, but he's gotten a lot better. When it's something that he really doesn't want to put down (tiny rocks he finds on the floor lol) I show him a treat and wait for him to drop it on his own without saying anything and then right when he's about to then I say 'drop it' and he gets the treat with lots of praise. Now when he finds a rock(like he did today) I just say drop it or put it down and 90 percent of the time he drops it unless it's some kind of food lol |
I taught Chloe "drop it" really easily with her favorite thing... Paper towels lol. Sometimes she takes a paper towel on purpose now though lol for a treat. Try teaching her with her favorite biting things first. It seems like it would be hard with toys because toys are "good" chewing things.. Paper towels aren't lol. |

I'll try showing her the treat and waiting for her to drop it, but I think she'll get fed up and run away. Quote:
Lola already brings me bad items if she wants something I'm eating. Like if I have ice cream she'll find a tissue or something and stand infront of me. |
