Question about training and dormant behaviours Hi everyone, My Yorkie Sadie will be 5 in June and definitely has small dog syndrome. We hired bark busters and I made sure that their techniques were right for us and they are approved by the ontario SPCA. My question is how long until I can expect her "snapping" at other dogs to no longer be in her thought process. She's attacked our animals, fights with them but never injured. So with the training how long will she have to not react in this way before she stops ever doing it? (I mean to an extent) I hope it's not 5 years since that's how old she is (almost) If anyone knows how long or has had experience with this that would be great. We're trying to really work with her and getting her to listen. I'd like to even do agility with her or some sort of activity to keep her focused on good things. But first I need to be able to trust her around all animals and kids |
It depends on too many factors to give you a good answer. Every dog is an individual and then so much depends on how consistent you are. Some dogs never get past these types of behaviors. Remember that the more they are able to practice the unwanted behavior, the worse it will be. If you have a situation that you know will set her off, avoid it, crate her etc so that she is not able to "practice" that bad behavior. I think it's a great idea to do agility with her or even obedience classes. When they are bored, sometimes they find things to do that we don't like. But a tired out dog is much easier to manage. Good luck! With lots of consistent work on your part, I really think you can work past this. |
