Leash Training When is a good time to start training my Nemo to walk on a leash? He is going to start puppy kindergarden soon and i want him to get used to it. I bought a harness so i could walk him, but the little guy does not want to walk. He just plants his whole body on the ground. I've tried to lure him with treats and toys, but didn't work. He is around 9 weeks now, and I don't know if he is to young or what? If anybody has any suggestions please let me know. Thanks |
Hello, Brady is now 12 weeks old and only started walking on her leash about a week ago. Before that it was the same thing as with you, she would just plop her body down. Puppy school taught us how to loose leash walk her but it was difficult because all of the other dogs pulled on the leash and Brady wouldn't move. Eventually with happy talking and encouragement (a toy or a treat) she walked but she still doesn't like seeing the leash in front of her...so she walks in front of us....also helps to have someone else calling her so she doesn't see the leash. Nemo will defintely get the hang of it... (cute name!) |
For puppy kindergarden you will need a collar. I don't think they will allow you to use a harness for training. |

I use the harness when I'm walking my dog for the same purpose you mentioned. For obedience and agility training, it has always been the collar. It has to do the way the dog is being pulled when it is on a collar vs. a harness. I guess it does not matter for puppy kindergarden, but the higher level of obedience it is always a collar. |
We are almost done with puppy headstart. We only have two weeks left. Anyhow, we use a harness with Esme, and I would never use a leash on her tiny neck because it seems so delicate! Actually, the breeder recommended using a harness too.. A harness is perfectly fine for training. It's the same as using a collar pretty much. Anyhow, when we started the puppy classes, she was 12 weeks. She finally started willingly walking on a leash last week. So it took about 5 weeks for her to get used to it. We did although only put her in the harness and leash on Sundays when we go to petsmart, puppy training class and Einstein Bagels. :o) So, I guess if you are more regular about doing it daily, it'll go faster. At first, we walked around the house with it. And then my husband would call her to follow him and I would walk behind holding the leash. It's funny because now she tries to run with the leash on and it's halarious because her feet are going but she isn't moving as fast as she would like! :D We also give her treats for not pulling (like I said, she likes to pull). Good Luck and Have fun!!!! Mari |
