Am I doing the right thing??? My 10 week old yorkie, Gabby, had a very hard time sleeping when we first got her. She is now doing better but still when she wakes up in the night will bark for hours. It is causing my husband and I to lose a ton of sleep. She is placed in a playpen during the day and at night. She has toys, a bed, and puppy pads. We put her to bed around 10:30 and we get up around 5. She wakes up whenever we move in the bed, move the covers, etc. She will bark as soon as she wakes and will bark until we go in there to get her. Should I go get her or let her bark and cry it out until we are ready to get up? Thanks for the help! Yorkie Talk has really been helpful these first few weeks. |
I'm not sure if I read it correctly, but is she staying in the playpen at night and during the day? If she is staying in the playpen during the day while she's awake and where she plays with her toys, she probably can't figure out why she's expected to sleep in it at night. I recommend using a crate at night - the space is probably going to be a little smaller and she will know the difference between play time and bedtime. It can take some time to crate train, but put a shirt or blanket that smells like you in the crate with her for some comfort. Some friends of mine also placed a blanket over their Westie's crate in the beginning to help darken it and it seemed to calm him down. She's pretty young, so she is probably just trying to get used to things. Best wishes! :) |
I'm probably not a big help, but I say put her in bed with you. We had a little nylon travel bag that would zip up. We would put Barney in it at night when he was little. It had mesh on one end. When he would start to cry, I could put my hand up on the mesh and he would lick me until he fell asleep. After he got older and I didn't worry about him falling off the bed, I took away the bag and now he sleeps in the bed with us. He climbs right up beside me and still licks my hand at night. |
