Advice re : nervousness and whining Hi all. New here and would welcome some advice about some challenges I am having with my adorable new yorkie. Kenzie is 13 weeks old and just got her second shots last week and has started to venture out and socialize. For reference we live in Canada and the weather here is down right cold. She's been a trooper. Loves the snow. Loves to play outside. Now comes the car and venturing to meet the neighbours. Long story short she gets scared. The car does it except when I fed her treats last time and a dog barking on our walk may do it. She shakes like a leaf. We went to a puppy socialization class on the weekend and she did the same thing and was not interested in the other dogs at all. The trainer commented she wasn't scared per say more wanting to engage only on her own terms. At home she isn't the least bit scared of our huge cat - 20lbs and licks him to death. I don't get it. She also has a tendency to whine and I notice now when I ignore her she sorts herself out. She also tends to get super hyper at times running around or digging ( or trying to) before settling right down to have a nap. Any advice on how to handle all this? I want to socialize her but am not sure if introducing her to dogs we know to start is a better way to ease her into things. She doesn't act strange with people and is otherwise a good girl. Any advice welcome! Thx |
Wish I had something to offer on that. Gracie is 12 weeks old. Her first car rides were in a purse type carrier bag so she was snuggled down and confined. After awhile we got her a Snoozer seat. She loves sitting in it up on the console. It has a "seatbelt" and she has a chewy in there. I feel so fortunate that she loves to go "bye bye". She expresses no problems at all. Hopefully someone else will have some words of wisdom. It crossed my mind that her early travels being snuggled in a carrier might have gotten her used to the car before she rode in the Snoozer where she could see everything. We travel on longer road trips with her strapped in a Sleepypod. She is cozy like in a bed, feels safe and yet can also see out. |
She's still young yet. Ruger did a lot of nutty things that he doesn't do now. He used to get nervous and throwup a lot in the car but now he's fine. I didn't do anything. I put towels on the seat and kept taking him places with me. Just made sure not to leave him in the car unless the temperature was okay. |
