Help! My Yorkie baby is afraid of everything! Hi all, I am new to YorkieTalk and I am looking for some advice.... My baby Zoey is 5 months old and is afraid of everything when we leave the house! She is very playful in the house and is very brave but as soon we take her out she refuses to walk, she doesn't like the sounds of the cars or even people walking by! She also is terrified when other dogs come near her. We have started taking her to puppy play sessions but she sits in between my legs and refuses to move. Is there something I can do to make her not so afraid? Thanks |
My Ruby was that same way and somewhat still is not quite fearful but not as accepting of humans whether we are in our home or elsewhere. Shes always been very vocal and at times timid which had lead to fearful fight reaction with the other dogs no matter how much we worked with her. We have taken out and around other people and she will just shiver with fright its so sad. She has gotten so much better these past few years. She will approach people when they are not looking to get their scent and will allow people to pet her. I guess we should have socialized her more but never did unless it was to grandma's house. Which she is totally cool with them and their pets. I would suggest keep doing the doggy socialization. Try taking her around other people whom you know and can setting in for a long visit with preferably someone with dogs. That will giver her a chance to wonder safely and smell out other pets and adjust to other smells. Have them play with her and offer her treats (Cheerio's or Zukes dog treats) to help her be more willing to be touched. But by al means never ever pet her when she is in a fearful mode... that will only reinforces her fear and possibly flight instinct. Let her be the one to approach them, when she is ready. |
Keep doing stuff with her and don't cater to the behavior. When they are scared, we tend to want to pick them up and baby them and say everything is all right which reinforces the behavior. Instead just ignore it and don't feed into it. But it is very important to work at this at least a few times a week if not more because it can develop into a more serious issue. They say a puppy needs to meet 100 people and 100 other dogs…. |
