Separation Anxiety Hi everyone! I'm new to Yorkietalk. I just got my puppy a week ago and had some questions. She's was very shy and passive. It was kind of hard to get her to play but now that she is used to the place she's all over the place and super excited running around. I've started crate training but she doesn't seem to like the crate much. I give her treats before she goes in and she'll play in and out of her crate during play time. One issue that I'm concerned about is....I don't want her to develop separation anxiety. She used to whine a bit and then stop when she was crated or in her pen when we left. She usually fell asleep. Now that she's more bold, she goes crazy when we leave the room. Today I had to leave her in a penned area with play space because our puppy sitter can't make it. I didn't want to leave her crated for 9 hrs. I put her crate with an open door to it, her favorite bed, lots of toys, kibble, water, and puppy pad. She's going onto 11 weeks so I've been concerned about her all day!! Any advice on how to minimize any anxiety when we leave and to prevent it from really turning into separation anxiety in the near future? |
There was a thread here recently of someone using a nanny cam.... Their pup slept most of the time the owner was away.... if you have the time, exercise your dog before you leave, it'll likely sleep shortly after you leave. |
Thank you! Yeah we are looking into getting a nanny cam. She did do a bit better this morning when I left. She seemed sad and depressed but just whine and didn't cause chaos like she did yesterday. I did give her a long toy with peanut butter but she didn't seem interested since I was leaving. Any suggestions on how to get her comfortable with me leaving even if it's for a short period of time? |
Welcome! Congratulations on your puppy. I have been "retired" with the 3 yorkies I have now. But with each one I would leave several times a day just for 15 minutes or so to get them use to me going out. Also, none of them were only dogs so they had company. When I did work, and only had one at a time, I didn't really have any problems. I do think they settle down shortly after we leave. |
Thanks Patti! I'm hoping that my little girl does calm down after a few minutes. I'm thinking she does because my neighbors haven't complained yet haha. I've tried the method of leaving for a few minutes at a time. She still doesn't seem to like it. I'll keep at it though. |
awwww I remember my girls after my husband passed and I had to go back to work full time - my youngest would just scream and hang on my leg - just heartbreaking. They still tend to get overexcited when I leave or come home but I was told to try to always stay calm and never pay more attention than you need to when you come and go. They will associate it better if no big deal is made of it - now actually putting this to the test is the big question - you just want to scoop them up and make their anxiety go away! Good luck! |
