Lilah refuses to potty outside We had a bunch of snow when we brought her home so we decided to use potty pads (she had them at the breeder's house too). She was pretty good with them then just stopped using them and would pee all over the rugs, often without even sniffing first to give us a warning. The last few days I've been working with her to go outside and all she does is chase leaves and explore. This morning I took her out of her crate, walked around outside for 10 minutes (she clearly was only playing) and came in the house, leaned down to unhook her harness and she darted into dining room and peed on the rug. Ugh! Took her back outside. Then about 10 minutes later, while eating her breakfast in the kitchen she just walked over near fridge and peed, again without warning. I'm waiting for her to eat (she picks at it) then back in the crate. My other yorkies figured this out much faster lol. Even if they had accidents they at least went outside when we went out. Good thing she's cute ;) (Oh and I also put a tissue out there with some of her pee on it and some poop as well. She doesn't even care) |
You may have to trick her into going outside. Take her out first thing like you did, bring her back in, then take her right back out again. That may be enough to trigger her to go, if she does, then praise her like a maniac and give her a treat. Also if she's going all over the house, time to confine her to the one room with potty pads, and praise and treat when she does it right. |

I didn't explain myself well, she is confined to whatever room we are in (either the family room or the kitchen and has a pad in both rooms…she's not allowed in dining room, just darted in there this morning as soon as we came in from outside….almost like she was holding it the whole time we were out and couldn't wait to pee as soon as we came in) . She was using pads pretty well but suddenly stopped. She gets lots of praise when she uses them so not sure why she stopped. I've housebroken several dogs (including 2 other yorkies) but this girl is a stinker! I never used pee pads before and wouldn't have this time except for the snow….now I'm regretting getting her to use them |
Haha! She's just thinking the outside is the best place ever and doesn't want to soil her new play area! It's just a matter of catching her in the act of 'going' outside then praising her to get it switched in her head, though it may take a few times as some are a bit thick. I had to praise my girl for peeing on the rug just so I could name it "Good Potty", then I could teach her to Good potty on the pad or outside. I thought well she's already peeing on the rug so it can't get any worse, lol. She learned fast once she understood what I wanted her to do. Just in case... you may need to have her checked for a UTI if training isn't working, or if there's increased frequency/urgency in her habits. |
I agree with KJC's advice. Does she know she can go potty outside? Max did not. He thought the pad was the only place to go. I took him walking and he couldn't hold it and went. When he saw how ecstatic I was, he wanted to potty outside all the time. We had to go through this for peeing and pooping. :D |

I know with mine, when I need to teach them something I really want them to 'get', I plan on doing it for at least 2 days in a row, usually the weekend. And I devote most all of my attention to them. Seems like a lot, but in the scheme of things it's a miniscule amount of time, considering the rewards of having a trained dog for the rest of her life. It took over two months training my girl, or trying to catch her doing the right thing so I could praise her for it. Finally the last weekend I sat down with her and she was all I paid attention to, bc I had to get this done. That's also when I changed my method, and rewarded her for peeing, although it was on the rug. I took a step back and realized she then understood the 'what', then we worked on the 'where'. She learned this in about 10 minutes, and when she learned she got a treat for using her pad, there was no stopping her. Whenever she did do wrong in the beginning, I would say, oh Sapphire, and she would do the absolute cutest head tilt with the blankest gaze... she was totally clueless! When she did 'get it', I swear I saw a lightbulb going on in her head! I do miss that head tilt though. She was like 'Who? Me? You want me Momma? Okay... soon as I'm done...' and she'd come running over to me all happy with herself. I was useless at training her, I'd melt every time, lol. |
