yorkie scared of car rides and more My 6 month old yorkie named Addie, gets scared to ride in the car...mostl in the front though...when I sit in the back she's fine most of the time but she freaks out when she rides in the front... when I first got her she was fine but as she's gotten more attached to me and has grown she has become a scardy cat...she's scared of other dogs but is fine with the two we have...but she loves people. She also used to be so good about being in a crate.. she wouldn't even bark but now she freaks out and almost kills herself trying to get out... so I can't leave her at home by herself and we can't figure out what to do with her when we go to church...please help...I'm scared to leave her at home in a box now because of what has happened...but I need to go to church :aimeeyork Thanks (I think part of the barking about being in her box is because she's gotten really attached to me...I take her everywhere and she sleeps with me....right now she's a sleep with her head on mine...) |
My Mitsi was the same way in a crate, she used to make herself sick. I honestly would put her into my bathroom, with some stuffed toys she liked, and potty pads, food and water and make her a little nest so she would feel secure. Now She stays loose in the house, which she loves because she has a perch she crawls up on and can see out the windows and people watch. Now the car is a different story, she hated it as well until I got her a car seat. It hangs over the back of the seat and has a seat belt for her harness and lets her stay secure and look out the windows. Really its a process to get them used to anything they dont like. We are still struggling with cutting her toe nails. |
My pups used to be afraid of car rides, but their anxiety decreased the more that they rode in the car so I would take her for rides more frequently or maybe try one of those thundershirts. I've never tried them but they also have chews in the pet store that you can give anxious dogs before car rides. My oldest pup was never crate trained so if I left her in a crate for hours she would probably freak out like your pup. I have a really long gate and I keep my pups gated off to a certain section of the house while I am gone. |
Max cried and cried in the car until he was a little over a year old. He cried 6 hours straight both ways to pick up his puppy brother. A doggy car seat made a big difference. Maybe having a doggy companion did too. A car seat with a little blanket and one of her favorite toys might help. Take her to places to do things she loves. Max loves walks, so he learned to love the car to go places. If you keep her in the bathroom when you go to church, make sure the toilet lid is down and that anything dangerous (razors, soaps, etc) are nowhere in reach. Work on leaving her for very short periods. Talk to her and she will learn keywords that will be reassuring. My boys are never alone (dad lives with us), but they can now be alone inside the house while we work in the study or outdoors. Start with 5 minutes, and build up. Tell her you be back a minute, a few minutes, a little while, and so on. She will gain confidence and learn when to expect you to return. |
