should I crate puppy if he keeps smudging his poop all over the floor and himself? When I'm away a few hours from home I leave my puppy in a good sized kennel. But every time I come back home I see poop smudged all over the floor and my puppy. Should I try leaving him in a crate when I'm away to solve this issue? |
how old is your pup? |

At that age, we kept Bella crated in the house alone for up to two hours. We were afraid to leave her alone any longer than that. She never pottied in her crate. I've read that you can keep a Yorkie confined in a crate for one hour for each age in months, plus one. At 16 weeks, that would be 5 hours total. I never tried that though, and I'd be a little scared of leaving a Yorkie confined and alone for so long. How many hours do you need to be away? |
I didn't crate train, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong: You said the crate is a "good sized crate" which I take to be big and roomy. I thought when crate training, it is only suppose to be big enough for them, like a comfy cave that was their bed. What I'm guessing is happening is, puppy is confined longer than he can hold it. Having enough room, puppy eliminates in the crate on one side (front or back) and hangs out on the other side of the crate away from the poop. When you get home, puppy gets so excited to see you that he runs back and forth in the crate (cause its roomy) and doesn't notice what he is stepping on. |
