Rescue Yorkie-training tips? Hi all- I have just adopted my first Yorkie (and first ever small dog)-C.J. He is a rescue dog and was found hungry and wandering with a nasty burn/cut on his back. I know nothing about his past, and the vet estimates he is about 2 years old. He is very loving and snuggly, but has what I think are normal Yorkie issues. He was not neutered when I got him, but it was done the last week of August. My biggest issue is potty training-I don't know if he was ever trained, and if the fact that he was not neutered intially causes problems. I attempted to crate train him as I've done with all of my other dogs, but he consistently would pee in the crate and then sit in it. The crate is the appropriate size, any smaller and he would not be able to stand. My vet does not think there is anything physically wrong with him. At this point he is mostly pad trained, and the way I accomplished that was putting pads in the spots where he was going. They were in two spots in the house, now I've gotten him down to one spot. He almost always pees on the pad, but often will poop on the floor somewhere near it. I would REALLY like to get him off the pads and outdoor trained only. Our other dog, an 8 year old collie mix, is trained. Any suggestions and tips would be appreciated! Thanks so much! |
I used the book How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days. Amazon has it for kindle. Of course it took longer than 7 days. We got our rescue, Anna, at 6 years old in May and Barney was around 5 months. I used it for both of them. I followed the schedule very closely. For a week, I did nothing but follow them around jotting down every time they ate, drank, peed, or pooped. I consistently followed the schedule all summer. They are now pretty much accident free unless it's raining. Happy training and welcome to YT. You will love this site. |
