Need Potty Training Help! My Oliver is 5 months old, and still not trained to potty outside! :( He just gained enough weight to fit in a harness, so we hadnt wanted him to go outside ( he likes to run away from us when we try to come close to him). It hadn't been an issue until now, he had been pottying on training papers, but now he likes to potty just off of them, or hide in a corner and poop again!! What is a good way to start getting him outside (he shivers like crazy and we feel bad making him so cold) |
He is still young. Have you read HOW TO HOUSEBREAK YOUR DOG IN 7 DAYS by Shirlee Kalstone? It might help or give you some new perspective |
We have 3 yorkies. 1 is about to turn 7 years old and it took us 3 months to potty train outside. When we got him, he was 3 months old and was not house broken, even though the breeder said he was 'paper trained.' we watched him like a hawk and took him outside every 1-3 hours, extending the time we took him out as the weeks ago by. By the end of the 3rd month, he was waiting by the door to go potty. Last April, we got 2 baby yorkies which are brothers, and we estimate the it took a good 6 months of potty training. One was very stubborn and would sneak a pee break around the house even though he has already gone out an hour ago. The other would actually hold his pee. After 6 months, one will bug us and let us know he has to go and the other will not tell us, hold it or go sneak one around the house. It takes a lot of time and effort and consistency to train these babies. But once they understand where they are allowed to go, you shouldn't have any more worries and issues. |
Well, it is seriously a big issue, and that’s why many people hesitate in keeping an animal home. Did you bring him home recently? If you have brought him in a very young age, then you should have taught him to go outside for pooping. It is okay you love your puppy, but compromising on hygiene is also not right. Now, you should cover him with a warm cloth or winter guard to protect him from cold, and give some reward to encourage him to go outside for potty. Or, one easy way is, you take him to a professional puppy training center like Cali K9 SF, and let them train your puppy. |
Bijou just turned six months and from month 4-5 we went through a rough time with potty training as well. She was going on mats or out on our balcony on a little grass thing, but I couldn't get her to go outside. What I did was after I fed her I would take her out for ~10 minutes, give the potty command in a grassy area. If she didn't go, she went back upstairs and into her little pen (where she wouldn't go). I'd wait 30 minutes, take her out again to the same spot and repeat. Eventually they have to go badly enough (esp. after eating) that she finally went. After she went once she was pretty good about going again in the same spot but sometimes she'll still go for a full walk outside then come home and go on her grass mat out here. We also got her a jacket for the cold and I don't think she like's going when she's in that - but again, if they have to go badly enough they will! Good luck! Also - with the mats, we try to only use them when we're gone for a while or if she has to go in the middle of the night. We also went through about a week phase of her ripping some up and peeing right next to them. She stopped doing it quickly though so hopefully it's just a phase. I got two of the washable reusable pads just to try them and she seems to hit those right in the middle consistently - no mess and can't shred. Also - my guess Oliver has a certain corner he poops in? We had that issue too - just block it off. We have one of these big gates - cleaned the area well with vinegar and kept it blocked off for a few weeks while training and now we took the gate away and she hasn't gone there since. |
