Potty training in winter I have an 11 week old puppy and my problem is I live in Canada so winters are very cold. I try to take him out but it just to cold for him even with a jacket. What have other people done for this? He doesn't seem to get the idea of pads and I really don't wanna get him trained to go in the house anyway. I'm stuck! |
if you really want him to only potty outside he will just have to learn to adjust to the weather. have you tried little shoes or boots for his feet? |
I've looked but can't find any small enough. I live in a small town so I'll have to wait until I go to the city to get him some. |
Hello Bentleys_mommy I am from Manitoba to! It was fairly nice 2 days ago and than it turned into a Man-burr-toba winter. My Ozzy is one next month and he is so good at peeing outside so I thought he would get used to it and just pee really fast. No Way. His little underbelly has like no fur on it and I had him out for maybe a minute and he looked terrible. I quickly took him in and cuddled, he was fine right away but I don't know what to do either. He is not into pee pads but I guess I will have to keep trying. It might just be me but I don't know if boots will do, what about the pink belly? is your baby this way. |
I put a sweater on him when he goes out, he still shakes like crazy. I've tried putting a pee pad in the garage but since I've done that he seems to go more outside. He has stayed out long enough to do his business at least twice a day the last couple days. Don't know if he'll keep that up when it's -30 or -40 with the wind chill tho! But he's not interested in pee pads either. I'm just gonna keep trying this winter knowing I maybe be cleaning up a few spots in the house until it warms up. Can't blame him I wouldn't wanna pee out in the cold either! Haha |

When I got Piper I bought an exercise pen for her and when she went outside to potty is was in the pen. When the weather started getting cold here we collapsed her exercise pen down to a 2x2 pen and have it set up with potty pads in the house. She learned that the pen was where she goes potty and is very good at going in there. She doesn't have a problem going on pads though. I had to buy my boots on ebay because it was the only place I could find them small enough. |
Hi there! I am happy to help. I do carry small boots if you are still needing to find some. |
He has gotten better at going outside. Gotten used to the cold weather. I have tried 3 different boots and numerous clothes to keep him warmer outside but he wants no part of it. I can't get him interested in pee pads at all. Was wanting him to use them at night as I work nights sometimes and other people don't want to get up with him in the night. |
Believe me it wont be easy . . Potty training in the winter is NO fun at all . . no one want to be standing in that cold wet snow. I've been there done that and I know how hard it is on you and the pup. It would help if they had a sweater and a coat and be sure that you stay with them to encourage them and praise them for a job well done. First try getting him use to going poo by taking a piece of the poo and place it on the ground where you want him to go. When he smells their own scent they will want to go. Take him to the same place each time. Eventually he'll figure it out. I think one of the easiest ways to potty train a pup it to teach them to come to YOu. Find out how to do that on my web site. www.dawnsyorkies.weebly.com/training tips |
He will pee and poop outside if he has to go when I take him, accidents in the house are getting less but still happening. Which is understandable. He won't let me know when he has to go out but I guess that will come with time. When I put any sort of clothes on him to go outside he'll just sit in one spot and won't move....I tried to wait it out and we were out there for 20 mins. As soon as I remove whatever is on him he'll start sniffing around and go. Very stubborn little boy I have! Haha |

Maybe leave it on in the house to get him use to it but if not what can you do. Gosh I hate to say this but you may have to do without the sweater. If that is what it takes to get him to do his business than you may be able to get in and out quicker that you would with it. It would be better for the both of you. No one want to stand in that type of cold. I have a solution for training him to give you a tell tell sign for potty time. Please read the section on my web site about potty training and teaching them their name and the Come command. Works amazingly well !! Its how I have train all of my pups . . |
We were forced to come up with an alternate to outside during a blizzard many years ago. We put paper down in the garage and our guy picked up on that rather quickly. It was still "outside" to him since we went out the same door. Doing that he still will go outside when we are not at home. Once we started doing this in the garage we never went back :) So very convenient in bad weather and when it is dark or when I am just not ready for anyone to see me |
Yes, I have had to use the garage with pee pads, With these windchills the last while its just to cold. My Ozzy doesn't like a sweater really but I have a furry Puppia vest for him that's really nice. |
We are at a balmy -30 this morning!!! If my baby didn't have a potty inside she would freeze to death even with a coat on. Her pee would probably freeze midstream. o.O |
