biting people Hello, we have a 5 lb yorkie (Allie) that some people were getting rid of because of a divorce. She is 7 now and we have had her for almost 2 years. When we first got her she would bite every now and then. She actually bit me the first time I picked her up but figured she was just scared. We camp a lot and she loves going with us but I can't let anyone near her or she will bite them. She is very cute and tiny of course so everyone wants to pet her but she just bites at them. If anyone goes into our camper she bites at their feet the entire time they are in there. There is a couple that we camp with all the time and she is used to them now and doesn't bite at them so she is better once she gets used to you but I can't have her donig this. I've tried telling her no or no bit or tapping her on the nose and telling her no but nothing works. She is very lovable with our family and anyone she is familiar with. Help, I want everyone to be able to love her as we do. |
Have you tried working with treats? Maybe giving her a treat when someone is near, but not close enough to upset her, then gradually letting them come closer and treating her when she doesn't react. |
I have but she just ignores the treats because she is so intent in attacking the person. |
Can you find a way to contain her when she bites? Everytime she tries to bite someone I would pick her up and say "NO NO' very firmly then put her in a room or crate (as long as it isn't where she sleeps as I wouldn't want her to associate her bed with bad) and leave her for 5-10 minutes. It has tobe where she cant see anyone. Don't say anything else to her just "no no" and put her in. After 5 or 10 mins just let her out. If she goes right to it again do the same. over and over. Eventually she will associate biting with being removed and hopefully she will stop. You have to do it everytime. though and right away. When she does listen and not bite give her a big belly rub and kisses. We are doing that with Jess and her crazy barking when someone comes over. Its starting to pay off! |
