Potty problems I've had trouble with Ruger since he was a puppy. He goes outside just fine, and I praise him, but he still goes inside, fortunately (mostly) he goes on pads I've put down. I know the biggest problem is my fault, in that I give him the run of the house so I never see him go in the house. I'm going to put up a gate so he can't go downstairs when I'm up and he can't go upstairs when I'm down. So now the question is when I see him go inside exactly what do I do? He doesn't have a specific spot outside, but there are several areas he likes to poop and pee close to the house. BTW, it's very snowy and cold here in the winter, so I don't want to completely eliminate his going on the pads. Also, if my theories are wrong please say something, and thanks. |
I would start by limiting his freedom, when you are home you can tether him to you with a leash on his harness so he is never out of your site. The size of his current freedom is similar to you living in an NFL football stadium and trying to find the bathroom. |
Do you want him pad trained? If so I would concentrate on just that for now. Put him in a small space with just pads and bed for now and slowly take away pads until he has free space and one pad. (make sure you put it where you want him to go on it from now on) I keep one upstairs for Jess and one downstairs. She has free roam now but it took a good 5 months before we didn't let her out of the kitchen. (my kitchen area is big but we started her off in a pen) |
