Do I have a problem? (biting) So, I know a problem with puppies leaving their siblings and family early is learning social behaviors and not to bite, etc. Well, I'm trying to teach Cherry not to bite. She is ALWAYS trying to bite hands. I yelp and take my hand away, which works sometimes. But a lot of the time, she just starts growling and trying to bite more. I've also tried tapping her on the nose and that doesn't work either. When we play, I use toys, but she always tries to grab my hand, not the toy. I put the toy in her mouth, but she jumps and tries to bite me instead of the toy, especially when she's super excited and has lots of energy. I've tried picking her up by the nape like mama does and then saying NO, but she just goes bonkers. Is this just a puppy stage? Or is this the start of a serious problem? Any other tips for me? Her teeth are getting SHARP! |
My Rocco was young when I got him and I went throught the same thing. He didn't respond to any of the usual tactics (replace with toy, ignore, put hands away, "NO", etc.) The only thing that worked was a "time out". Not as a punishment, but so he could just calm himself down, much like a toddler. I'd give him the chance to respond to other attempts to stop, and if he just kept going (he'd get SO ramped up!), I'd calmly so "no", pick him up and slowly and carefully put him in his crate or behind a gated area. NO yelling, no shaming, no harsh discipline. After ONE minute, he was usually calm, and I'd sweetly tell him good boy, take him out and he'd be a new puppy. He was never there more than 2 minutes, although sometimes I had to repeat it. It worked like a charm. Some may say don't use the crate as a punishment, but it wasn't. He loved his crate and it was his safe place to gain control of himself. All pups are different, but this worked for me and took no more than 2 weeks or so. |
My Jack was the same. I would saying No Bite and walk away. It took a while but he eventually quit it. He never liked the toys I tried, he still don't care for toys. He loves picking my panties up off the bathroom floor while I'm bathing. He knows I'll take off running after him, give me my panties. He thinks that is so funny! |
