I'm thinking of taking classes at petsmart I'm thinking of taking classes at petsmart to help with the commands, but I'm not sure how much I'll get out of them. Lola already knows a bunch of tricks (sit, lay down, stand up, stand on hind legs, roll over, sit pretty, shake, and high five), but I'm not so good at commands (come, stay, leave it, drop it). She's almost 7 months old and 4.5 lbs. I mostly want help with commands and possibly help with her approaching people in a calmer way. They might be able to help with leash walking too, but she does well with loose leash walking unless she's too busy smelling or wants to approach a person or dog. She'd enjoy playing with the other dogs, but other than that she doesn't really need socialization. The paper mentioned stuff about nutrition, grooming, and potty training, I don't need any of that. I'm also not sure which class would be better, puppy or beginner. The employees said she can go in either because of her size. I know I need to talk to the trainer more, but didn't have time for a long discussion at the time. |
I would try to get her in a class with other small dogs. Maybe the puppy class would be best but you could ask the trainer. Our pups went to training at out Community Center but the trainer was a former PetSmart trainer. They did great. They learned sit, come, stay (they learned stay so well I could walk clear across a gymnasium with my back turned and they wouldn't budge until i called them), leave it, drop it, leash walking, walking through crowds of dogs and more. It was well worth it. We were in a puppy class. Have fun! |
I forgot to add, I take Lola to parties at a local pet store so I know how she is with other dogs. She's super excited when she first meets them, wants to lick them, jump all over, rolls on her back, etc. After she's done she calms down and will focus on me. She's the same way with people OMG NEW PERSON!! NEW PERSON!!! AHHHHHHH I LOVE YOU!!! then she just wants me, she'll turn around and put her head on my shoulder or go between my ankles, like you're dismissed. Or she'll see the next person she wants to greet. I would go with PetSmart in that case. You will be doing most of the work at home anyway. And if you like the first class at petSmart you can always do an intermediate class after the first one. Yorkies are smart and the ones i have seen in training did very well, especially if they like treats. We used to go to the PetSmart birthday parties and they always had an obedience contest. One year they did musical chairs. When the music stopped they had to do a sit. Daisy won the obedience competition every year she was in it. Lol I was so proud of my little stinker. she always got a PetSmart gift card which meant more treats. Smart girl. |
I'm going to put my (2) in it. At least until they get through that. Basically learning the basics, I will then have them see a separate trainer which comes to the house. She charges 450 for 6/hr. long sessions. That way she will work on whatever needs to be touched up or extended on. |
I did the pet smart class with Jack it was real helpful. I did do the puppy class since he was small. I took Jack n Josie back and did a one on one class. One reason when I had taken Jack he really enjoyed the other pups and wanted to play more than learn. Lol |

I took classes at Petsmart with my Pomeranian. I think the best part is them learning these key commands with distractions of other pups and people. Also hearing other people give commands and only listening to you. Draco is good at a few commands but I still plan to sign him up for classes. I'm going to use the ZoomRoom though, but only because I plan to get into more of their classes, like Agility and such in the future and it'll be great to already be familiar with the instructors. |
I literally just got back from signing up Mickey & Minnie. Hopefully they like it and the training works. Im sure it will. Its really close by to my house as well which helps. |
I've always had good results with the Petsmart training. One of our local trainers is also a friend of my mom. He told me there is no difference in the beginner and puppy class in terms of training. They do cover more puppy care in the puppy class, but the techniques and commands are identical. It all comes down to what would make you and your dog more comfortable. If you are nervous around bigger dogs, then take the puppy class. If your dog gets along well with bigger dogs, then take that. |
Draco- the distractions are part of the reason why I want to take the classes. I'm glad they worked well for you. Buffy- How are you going to handle having 2 puppies? Seperste classes? Another person? Rhett- Lola loves any and all dogs. She wanted to play with this super hyper full grown lab and she bosses around my cousin's medium sized dogs. I'm the one who gets nervous. |
