cat flap toilet training was going well but now it isnt I have a 3 month old yorkiepoo. The first few weeks I started training him with puppy pads by the back door. Then since then I have trained him to go out the cat flap to the toilet and he now doesn't have any puppy pads. He stays in the kitchen most of the time with a baby gate. I take him into the lounge with me when I'm home to watch him. He has been going through the cat flap for three weeks now. So today I thought I could open the baby gate and give him a bit more space so he had the hallway as well. But he has done two wees on the carpet. I thought if he wanted to go he would have gone straight through cat flap and outside like usual. Was it to soon to give him that extra space? Am I doing something wrong should I still be going outside with him to reward and praise him when he goes toilet? Any advice would be really helpful Thanks Tracy and Fidget |
Anyone got any help or advice? Thank you |
I'd love to know too! We just gave my 5 month old some extra room by opening up the kitchen area to him. He immediately peed on the floor! A few hours later he did it again. I rally thought he had gotten the hang of using the pad or going outside. We are now back to keeping him confined to one room. One step forward, two steps back. Ugh! |
He may have gotten smacked or spooked going through? We had a cat flap in the screen door that Pluto used to use. Then we locked it because the cats started getting out (go figure :D). When the cats are outside in their catio, I started unlocking it again but Pluto seemed to forget how to use it. With some high value treats, he quickly got back into the swing of things. Try some hotdog or string cheese as a reward and I bet after awhile you'll be fine again. One last thing - make sure that it's not something outside that scared him or is scaring him and I'm assuming that your backyard is very secure. We have a very safe high fenced backyard and I have windows on the entire back of my home facing the yard, so I can see Pluto at all times. |

Yep, sorry I didn't read correctly. ;) |
A pups world should stay small for quite a while. giving them a whole room is so overwhelming for them. Think of you living in the middle of a giant stadium. That's how they feel. So they get overwhelmed and pee. I would keep the space as it is for at least 6 months. then just open it by small degrees. A hallway to them is probably like a football field to us. |
