Training 2 puppies to walk Hi there I'm new in YT, nice to meet you all : ) We recently got 2 yorkie puppies (2 boys) now 4.5 months, had all their vaccines so we've been taking them out for walks on their harness. The trouble is they won't walk, they just freeze and lie there like a rug. We tried all sorts of coaxing, cheerios, their fav toys etc. but they just lie there. Milo, the more active puppy will play with other dogs when they come sniffing. Sooty is more reluctant. I'd walk a few steps, kneel down and ask him to come, he'll come eventually when i wait patiently. Then I get up, walk a few steps and hv to kneel down again to wait for him to follow. This goes on our entire walk. Am I doing something wrong with training? Please help, I'd love for our boys to enjoy walking more. May be cheerios aren't a good enough coax? Has anyone tried Yummeez treats? What other treats do yorkies love? Cheese? Grateful for you help! Thanks! Yorkigal :aimeeyork:aimeeyork |

I would suggest attach their harness and leash in the house and just let them run around like that for awhile.. Play with them and Praise them to let them know that the Harness and Leash means fun times.. Then try just walking them around inside the house , give them praise when the do.. Gradually work your way towards the front door , give them praise and treats when they get to the door.. Eventually work your way outside , don't go too far the first time . It is a big world out there , they just need to get used to it.. :) |
Thanks WJM for your advise :) They actually walk fine in the house, even heeled to command, its the outside that's the problem. I guess the world is too big for these tiny puppies huh? Do you think its the treats? Is the cheerios not good enough? Any advise for treats yorkie puppies will go crazy for? |

wow, they sound very well trained.. Yeah, maybe they just need to get used to the outside.. I know a lot of people use cheerios but you could also try tiny pieces of boiled chicken breast. Most dogs love it..:) |
Ok I'll try the chicken next time! Thanks! :) |
Scaredy puppy I am having similar problems with my Mia. It has been so hot out, and she just completed her shots (except for the Rabies) last week, so she is only out in the front of the house if we are going somewhere in the car---which she HATES! As soon as I put the harness and leash on her to go out, she starts crying and shaking. I try to coax her with her favorite biscuits, but she is so panicked that she isn't interested. I figure it is one of those things that the window of "socialization" is closing on, and if I had it to do over, I would have at least carried her around outside to get her used to the smells and sounds. I am just going to make sure I keep taking her out several times a day to get her used to it, and give her lots of praise and treats when we are getting ready to come back in. Hope it is not too late to address all of her fears! I keep telling myself that SHE doesn't know that the socialization window is nearly closed.;) |
My Pixie will absolutely not walk if I hold her leash. So I hold the other 2 who walk nicely together and Pixie wals right behind us with her leash dragging behind. As soon as I pick it up,she lays down and nothing will get her moving except dropping her leash. Since yours are so young it may just take time, patience and treats. |
I use fresh bacon as a lure. Maybe they are scared outside.Maybe just carry them on your walk so they get over it. Yorkies are so funny, they all have little quirks |
Walking My Sophie was the same. I was at my wits end. Then along came the neighbours huge husky. Well it was love at first sight and she started following her. Next thing you know Sophie is walking on a leash. She still stops sometime but then gets going. They will walk when they feel comfortable, its just kinda frustrating for a while. Good luck. |
Hi all, I'm so happy to tell you guys this great news. My 2 boys began to walk and heel outside! Last week we took them out on an evening walk and they just took off, a little hesitant still but not laying on the ground as much anymore :) For some reason, it was nothing to do with treats or anything. May be they just got over their fear of the big world. Thanks all for your support and sharing :) |
How is this going now? |
