Car issues My 13year old guy gets very excited when we have to go somewhere in the car. He barks constantly, claws at the carrier door. He i gets very anxious. I have tried giving him treats to get in the carrier or car. I have taken him to see friends as a reward, but nothing calms him down. I woul love to go on a car trip with him this summer, but at this point he can't handle it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. He has been this way his whole life. Nothing I try works. Thanks for your help |
Hi, have you tried a car seat rather than a carrier? I found that mine did better when they could look out the window. It was also helpful that I could reach over & touch them if they started to get stressed out. |
I'm sorry you're going through this...it's very stressful, and doesn't make for very safe driving.... Harry was like this when he was a pup, but it seemed to calm down once he hit 2 years old - I think with him it was also over-excitement, knowing he was going to his 'nana' or somewhere else nice....he just couldn't control himself. However, your Littlie is 13 years old - so what else can you try? :) I wonder if you've tried one of those 'calming' diffusers? I never did, but have heard good things about them. Also, others swear by Thundershirts - again, I've never tried one, but I believe there's a complete money-back guarantee if it doesn't work. Harry goes in a crate in the back of my car, and HE seems to have got better once I secured him more inside. He has his harness on in there, with a seat belt adaptor clipped to it and plugged in, then the whole 'human' seat belt around his crate so it can't slide around. I really, really wish you luck and hope you find a solution - I know what a nightmare it can be.....:) Sally + Harry x |

they have spray which is dap, dog appeasing phereomone that mimics the smell of a nursing mother, it might be worth a try |
Pure lavender oil will help... You can buy it at gnc, and the all natural oil won't hurt their skin. A small bottle will cost a little less than 10 dollars and will last a VERY long time (a little goes a long way). Rub a drop between your fingers and then rub it on the tips of the ears. It really worked well when Shelby was in physical therapy for her LP. Remember, it needs to be all natural and not the stuff used for lamps, room freshener, or etc. |
I high car set that they can see outside works great. Jess is great in the car now |
Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions. In the past I have tried everything except the lavender. I will give that a try. He is such a sweet boy, never gives me any problems. Just does not like the car for some strange reason. Thanks again, |
