Yummy potty pads! So we finally brought home our little girl this afternoon. She's 8 weeks old (I know, save the lecture please). She knows what to do on the potty pads, much to my shock and delight when she had to potty she walked right into the ex-pen and went on the pads. Now that she's explored and played, it's time for her to rest and spend some time in the ex-pen so when she went in there and walked into her crate, I closed the ex-pen door. Within 5 minutes she was trying to eat the pads. I've had older pups start chewing on their pads, that's when I knew it was time to start removing them and transition to solely outdoors. However at 8 weeks, there is no way she's ready for that yet. I'm in a pickle. I need to have the pads in there, and I need her to not eat them! Any suggestions other than putting a toy in her mouth instead every time I see it? |

So we finally brought home our little girl this afternoon. She's 8 weeks old (I know, save the lecture please) and I don't care how much time you all have spent on here when you didn't have to...time explaining why we should wait for at least 12 weeks....I don't appreciate it and did what is best for me (not my pup), but I have a question, could you waste some more time on me??? Good Luck with Chloe...I hope she fares better than many of the 8 week old pups I see here with problems.... |
Your puppy is just that age where when they get bored they tear things up. I quit using disposable potty pads many years ago and I just use the washable ones. You might try one of those potty pad holders. |

I have asked sincere questions a couple of times, and have gotten lectured on things that had nothing to do with my question. I came here to learn and share, but not to be lectured ya know? Sorry you felt your time was being wasted. I'll not continue posting. Thanks anyways. |
I agree, I think a potty pad holder would work great, for your little spitfire. You can try the washable too. One of our members makes them- she is awesome! Cathy ( 107Barney) She has tons of fabric choices and everything she makes is quality! Congrats on your new baby, would love to see pics of her. |
Yes, I'd get the washable ones, she won't be chewing those! |
I also used to have a chewer. I started using washables & LOVE them. She eventually outgrew her chewing habit, so now I use the disposables upstairs where guests won't see them. T.Bumpkins has the BEST washables. They're really well made & they have a great fabric selection. |
I agree with the others...try the washable pads, or, there are puppy pad holders that would probably make it harder for her to chew them. Good luck and congrats on your new baby...looking forward to seeing pictures of her! |
I'm no expert on potty training by any means (still in the process with my pup), but I had an idea for you when I read your post-- Maybe purchase one of those wee-wee-pad housebreaking sprays (a family member gave me one by Four Paws although I haven't tried it); you spray it on the wee-wee pad. It smells pretty bad to be honest (not why I haven't used it though) so maybe she won't want to eat it anymore and maybe the product will even help with the housebreaking itself? |
Get the washable pads. |

She'll stop after she sees you really don't like her doing that! I have a six month old male and he used to rip them just for fun, he stopped a few weeks ago. Good luck. |
I got Draco at 8weeks too. >.< But he's always been really good at pottying where he's supposed to. I have a potty pad holder so he's never been able to pull and chew on the pad. I saw someone talking about a spray to stop chewing, I only know of bitter apple spray. I haven't needed for Draco. But it helped a lot with my Pomeranian at puppy stages and stopped him from chewing on things like couches! Good luck with your pup! |
The pad holder did not work for my boys. They would dig at the pad until they could get a piece then chew it up. And they would do this whether the pad was soiled or not. Finally got a big rascal, and no chewing plus I don't use washable because my boy thought all washable was same as any fabric on floor ( rug, large dog bed, carpet). He uses the fake grass from rascal. Trying to train him to outside but he doesn't like getting his feet wet when the grass is damp. Just pees on concrete instead. |

There is a potty training spray from natures miracle to sup on the pads, it has the same pheromones as their own ursine, it does small really bad though :-) I air them out outside for a few minutes first, well that was when I tried it. I ended up buying the pad holders and he hasn't torn one up since. I also rub just a tiny bit of his own urine on the new pad before inserting it to the holder. It's really just learning your puppies behavior, and watching for signs of what he likes better. There is also a spray from natures miracle you can spray on your floors that they are not supposed to like, so then the pads smell better then the floor. I plan to spray my whole floor with it this weekend, will let you know if it works :-) |

I tried the spray a few times since I posted that. It does smell like a zoo exhibit, but it was not too noticeable when I sprayed it on pads in my open living room area. However, when I sprayed it on pads in her "room"--my bathroom--and closed the door overnight, it stunk way too much the next morning. Luckily she is going potty on her pads now with a 99% success rate after some dedicated treat training (I was constantly home with her for at least a week and monitored her potty-ing with superwoman focus haha). I returned the spray. Good luck with the yummy potty pad issue!:animal36 |
Also thought I would add what potty pads worked for Bambina since they work wonderfully. We use the Hartz Home Protection Pads from Costco (great price). She does try to rip one up once in a while as I'm putting it down, but only for play; she hasn't tried eating them! |

I had the same problem to with my boston terrier and I found the best solution! They sell these potty pad holders at pet stores where you place the pad and then on top you place a holder and click lock it in and done they won't play with it any more. Also I learned in Cesar Milan to place water bottles or shoe laces or them to be able to rip and tear them apart so they get that ripping apart feeling out of them. The water bottle worked miracles with my boston, the cracklings noise would make him think he was ripping something apart. |

I hadn't used Hartz with my other dogs; this is my first time using this brand. |
This product worked really well for me...it holds the pad and they can't reach it at all! Taka started to eat the pads when we first brought him home at 4 months so we quickly found something that might work and it did!! We still use it now as a pee-pad instead of a training pad and he's 11 months old. Hope this helps! (of course there are other colors besides pink haha) |
Gizmo has recently figured out how to get the pads out again from the pad holder, so I purchased this one last night I really liked this potty pad/ litter box because it has the holder as well as it being 3 sided, so he will feel like he has privacy, plus if he decided to lift his leg in the future, the 9" sides would contain it. It's a little pricy but I figured if it helps, it will be worth it, and it had great reviews :-) it also has the option of using the pads, or the artificial turf, as it has a reservoir in the bottom as well. I am going to try with pads though and hope he can't get them out of this one haha. He's like a little Houdini when it comes to removing pads :-( I will et you all know how this one works when I get it :-) |
you will love the richell!! |
I trained Jasper on potty pads with no problem of him trying to eat them. Then we bought the tray to hold the pads. I did not think he would use it. The 2nd evening we were hfinishing up some things in the master bath. This is where his tray with the pad in it was. He walked over to it and smelled it. He stepped. So I told him "Jasper tee tee" ...so he took a couple of turns and peed on it. Even the Contractors were there. So we are all there.:) poor Jasper he probably has tee tee or poo poo anxiety after that. Lol P.S. ~ this was probably more I formation than you needed. My point is, I love the and so does my Jasper. I say give it a try. Good muck to you! :) |
My Stella only went on potty pads at the breeder's house and never chewed one them. The minute I brought her home it was like a game with the potty pads! I put one down in the living room and off she went! I tried putting her in a small kennel for the times I would leave the house, but she is too smart for her own good, and she would try to poo poo outside the kennel and make a big mess, or she would wrap it up in her blanket. So my dad gave me a bigger kennel to put potty pads in. She tore them up! So...I invested in a potty pad holder. Lifesaver!!! She doesn't tear them up in the kennel, but if I take them out to dispose of them, she's on it! Good luck! And soon your little one will LOVE to go potty outside! Stella does :) |
