How do you get your yorkie to bark to go outside? Our potty training with my now 18 week old Cookie has had its ups and downs. The previous two days she only had one accident total, but today four! We generally take her out right when she wakes up from any kind of sleep, immediately after eating/drinking, then 15 minutes later again if she hasn't gone, and every 30 minutes or so when she is up. For the most part she is pretty quick about peeing and pooping when I give her the command "Go Pee" outside (and then HUGE praise when she does), but we're the ones initiating everything. The only exception is when she has to go out while laying in her bed in her cage at night, in which case she whines to go out. She has never initiated a trip out otherwise, other than indirectly by circling or actually going. Is there any next step I have to take with her training to get her to start whining when she wants to pee/poop when outside of the cage? Or is it just something that happens on its own after months of praise when going outside and immediate trips into the back yard when she does it inside? |
I realize this is still probably early to talk about the end game, but how does one get his yorkie to start on that final turn? |

I'm sorry Chris you are having problems. I'm not sure how to "train" to bark to go outside. I think once she "gets" it, she will probably ask to go out. I have heard of the bell training too, but no help there either. I use doggie doors, and they go out on their own. I know how hard a Yorkie can be, so keep up the good work! |

do not have time to read the whole thread, but to me I don't want to do anything to encourage a dog to bark, Lola is 100% potty trained and rings a bell (long ribbon with jingle bells attached to the bottom) Best thing I ever did was train her with bells. Cook has started barking to go out too now. She asked out four times today, twice barking, twice just looking and catching our attention after walking to the door. After all this work it really feels good to see her doing this just a couple of days shy of her 5 month birthday. After reading the horror stories about potty training yorkies I figured we might be looking at another couple of months before she started asking out. I know we're still a ways away from being home with the potty training, but it's hard not to get excited with how quickly things are progressing now. |
Once she realizes the praise and excitement she gets from you is for her going potty outside...she'll let you know, any way she can get your attention, to let her out. Winston just sits and looks at me, if that doesn't work he'll make a low grunt noise. I ask him "do you wanna go outside" or "do you gotta go potty" and he starts running in circles to the door. He was a dream to train, not having a single accident in the house at all. Now I swear he would explode before he went potty inside...he just knows not too. Sounds to me like Cookie is on the right track, keep up the good work and she'll find her way to let you know. |
Oh my God, it rained yesterday and the ground is still soaked, and the last two days Cookie will not go pee outside except right after waking up in the morning. I don't know if she hates the mud or the wet grass, but she has gone on the carpet 4 times these last two days and is driving me wild with her crying now that I'm crating her. :mad: I hate making the crate a place to punish her, but there is no other way right now when she is refusing to go outside on our trips. I don't have floor space for any kind of real playpen. Usually when there is heavy rain I can get her to go real quick and she runs to the door, but no such luck now. Maybe because this is the first rain we have had since early July? |
Argghhhh, this is so frustrating because she has been doing incredibly with her potty training for more than a month until yesterday. I can't believe a little moisture in the ground is spooking her so. :( |
