Grass Eating Fool! 1 Attachment(s) Oscar's favorite thing in life is to eat grass! We have old half living crab grass and Oscar thinks it's better than Bacon(I'm guessing, of course we haven't given him bacon(yet)) He is 16 weeks old and I would like to let him spend a little more time in the back yard other than potty breaks but he just eats eats the grass! I feel like I can not reinforce the habit so I correct it and more on smartly. Advice please! Should I just let him eat? Should I continue to discourage this behavior? I absolutely can't let him in the yard without this happening even after a week of discouraging.... Grr! Is this a puppy thing? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks! |
I'm definately not an expert but this doesn't seem normal to me. None of my pups has ever eaten grass unless they have a tummy upset. I would consult your vet. Your baby is adorable!! |
I actually do think it's normal since both my dogs eat grass when they are in the backyard. It seems that they do it out of excitement. It's so hard to stop them but I try to discourage it by giving them bones or something else to chew on. |
Vet seems to think it's normal puppy type behavior and is to be associated with teething. I just hate it! I am just looking to curb this habit while he is young. However, I am realistic and he is a puppy so I will stay grounded on my expectations... I bring toys or bone, Oscar drops it in an instant when he smells that wonder grass! haha Thank you for the complement, Oscar has got us wrapped up pretty good. It's tough training dogs as cute as a yorkie! |
It's very normal puppy behavior! They just get these odd ideas in their heads... haha... AllDogBoots gives really great advice: a chewy or some toy might "distract" him and channel the chewing in a better direction. You'll probably have to switch it up and keep rotating toys to keep his attention off the grass...You just have to wait it out until Oscar grows out of his little phase :) Good Luck! |
Jess still occasionally nibbles grass but as they are older they understand the no command better. Try a blanket over the grass and an expen, especially if the grass eating ends up giving him the runs.. |
Dexter ate grass for awhile but seems to have given it up now. He'll be 7 months in roughly a week. |
