train to hold it longer in the house? I'm out of ideas! okay so after 2 rounds of antibiotics as precautionary....a new lab work showing NO uti of any sort...x rays and a catheter to rule out any bladder stones....my dog has been given a completely clean bill of health!! therefore the only conclusion my vet can come to is that hunter's need to go out every 15 minutes and squeeze out a few drops of pee is completely behavioral... he's definitely catching on to housebreaking and that outside is the place to potty but if he wont hold it more than 15 mins we're never gonna have a house dog that i dont have to stress about and watch 24/7!! any ideas on how to teach him to hold it longer while outside of the crate?! he does great inside the crate but goes to the door every 15 mins while outside of the crate and if i dont take him out he'll piddle on my carpet!!! the vet mentioned some kind of medication that makes the urethra (?) close up a little and make them not feel the sensation to have to go as much but i am hesitant to put him on something like that because i dont want to give him any health issues and it seems kind of cruel |
First, is he neutered? He could be "marking" his territory! Have you tried using Belly Bands? That would at least protect you carpet and furniture. |
yes he's neutured and it's been a long time since he's marked in the house.....he does it outside though and yes we used belly bands but they make his fur gross and i refuse to put them back on him |
I'd try the belly band, but then gradually increase the amount of time between potty breaks, maybe 5 minutes at a time, and take him out anyway, even if he goes in the belly band. Some dogs learn to dislike the feel of a wet belly band and will stop peeing in it. Also give a food reward when he does it right, along with a ton of praise. |
he peed all day long in a belly band he could care less...and they make him stink and turn his fur gross ugly colors because he's white... i refuse to put them back on him again |
We have a male that wasn't neutered until we got him at 1 1/2 years of age. He still marks and dribbles when he pees! We had a male pom for 12 years and he did the same thing......maybe it is just that male tend to do this. I prefer females as they are less likely to do this. I really don't have any answers for you! :( |
Interesting dilemma. I should be seeing my trainer this afternoon and I will ask her about this. One immediate thought I had was is it possible now with the nice weather to spend several hours outside with him? I was thinking in the backyard with you while you are gardening or reading a book or what-ever? Observe how often he needs to urinate when he has free access to go as often as he likes? Has he been neutered and if so at what age? There are some dogs who have what is termed spay incontinence. Is this what your vet thinks? In terms of belly bands, they have to be changed often in order for the urine not to stain the hair. Also males that mark or females for that matter, the marking is a much deeper color than the urine is. |

They make a whitening shampoo for white/light coats, but do not get it on the darker hair! Or crate train him, or a small room confinement. Has he always done this? I would also suggest taking him out for longer periods (if this is not the case), to allow him to pee as much as possible (empty him out), before bringing him back in. |
