Bella won't walk outdoors any more?!?
 
Bella is 12 weeks old now. When she was 9 weeks, I could take her outside on her leash and she would follow me closely down the block at my side almost perfectly (except for getting tangled up in my legs sometimes). Now when I take her outside on her leash, she just wants to sit on the pavement and not budge. If I try to coax her with a treat, I have to get down on the ground, wave frantically to get her attention, and then she might come over to me to get the treat, but she sits right back down again. I can't even get her to end of the driveway. She is not afraid of her leash, collar, or harness, because I can walk her around inside the house with no problem. She seems to be afraid or overwhelmed by something outdoors. It's puzzling to me, because she used to follow me outdoors. Could this be related to the change of seasons? When I first got Bella, it was the beginning of Spring, and now Spring is in full bloom.

Hi, I am having the exact same issue and came on here today to see if there were any posts about it. I had to coax Bentley to take a walk the other day we went around the corner to the park and once we got there, he turned around, took off running and ran right back home. It was cute but its frustrating because now that the weather is nice I want to walk outside for exercise.

here is how a trainer explained it to me. The world, once they realize more of the surroundings is huge to them . Think of you standing in the middle of giants stadium. Where to go what to do? Whats that sound. As they get older they are more aware...
She said take small strides. So take the pup to the front hallway near the door and let her sit. Then bring her in. Then go to the driveway, let her sit..then the street, and so on. It may take a many times but it works. I had to do that with Jess IN the house in different rooms then started on the outside. Our house has alot of rooms and is overwhelming to a pup..she couldnt even fathom the outside. now she runs around the house and outside..

also you can try a stoller. If shes/he is cozy and feels protected u can get your walk while she gets adjusted to all the sounds while being protected. I have a purse that has leg holes that I can wear with her in it too..

Congratulations on new puppies to the posters above. They have so much to learn to feel safe and confident.

Have they had all their shots already? If not, then they should not be walking on the ground where other dogs have been. They can get parvo very easily.

Maybe you should hold off walking on the street for a while. Keep them in smaller more protected areas of your home or yard until they are a little older.

Bella has had all of her puppy shots (including parvo) except the 16 week set that includes rabies. My community has strict leash laws and there are no dogs running loose, plus I take her only in the street and not other peoples' lawns, at least I used to until she decided to have a sit-down strike. I will try to get her accustomed to the driveway (again!) and see how she does over time.

Being a male, I think I would be laughed at if I carried Bella in a purse with leg holes :D, but the stroller might be a possibility, or maybe I could even carry her in her pet carrier, just around the neighborhood.

Should only walk her after she's had all shots.

Now that that is said, her pads are very soft and tender. Could be they got sore on her first walk. Also the pavement could be too warm for those tender pads. Right now, just walk her around in her own yard with harness and leash for training. Don't pull on her. Let her lead the way while you just follow her. This will let her get use to harness and leash first.

I did feel the pavement with my hand first, and it was a little toasty, but tolerable. This afternoon, she went halfway down the driveway with me. Then I took her into the front yard to sit with me in the grass, smell dandelions, and watch bees (safely from a distance :)). I won't take her where there are other dogs (or other animals) until after her 16 week shots.

You might even exercise extra caution a little longer than that (just my opinion). I would be careful letting him go anyplace other dogs go. A carrier is a good idea, especially when taking one to the vet, so they don't touch anything a sick dog has been in contact with.

I just read that thread and it's tragic! Yorkies can get parvo even if vaccinated, if they are under 1 year of age, and the virus can persist in the environment and be carried by clothing or shoes. I won't take Bella beyond the front yard for the time being. (I live in a fairly dog-free neighborhood, and no one walks their dog through my front yard.)

yeah I felt silly too even being a girl but she broke her leg and it was the only way to carry her while it was healing...I tried it just around my house because I felt goofy..

Zoey hated walking... Still sort of does. First, I found out it was b/c it was hurting her paws. After I remedied that, she didn't mind walking for a bit but after 1-2 blocks, she'd scratch my leg to be picked up. I'm pretty sure it's not b/c her paws are hurting so I figure she just doesn't like walking for more then max. of 3 blocks. I ended up buying a dog backpack and carry her while I walk Magnus. Then at the last 2 blocks, I let her out and she's happy to walk the rest of the way!

If you don't want to go with a stroller, try the backpacks. The one I have is by Kyjen's Outward Hounds "dog carrier". I love mine!

Thanks for this. I've been frustrated with Kilo since he used to go outside to play but now just sits. He doesn't even want to eat treats once he did something good outside. Quite hard to be a first dog owner
