New yorkie mommy! We just picked up our gorgeous little man. Our breeders do have their dogs his mommy and daddy trained on pads. So we are trying to follow suit. So any pointers would be great. So far were having issue with him actually going in his play pen where we keep the puppy pads. We will intimately yell "uh uh" if he starts and redirect him, but he just sits and stairs are you and doest go . I'll leave him in the for some time, and then when i let him out most the time he wont go, but on one or 2 occasions he has gone outside of his playpen after being released. My OTHER issue is with #2 it seems he's being shy and very much does NOT like to poop in his playpen. He tries to hid then go. So then I'll put him in his pen and he will circle and circle and circle until he can no longer hold it. My only other issue is that he doesn't seem to found of treats :( maybe I'm pushing it too early. I want to give him a reward besides loving when he does a trick, or goes to the potty. We aren't taking him outside at the moment he's only 8 weeks so he needs more vaccines. As well as the fact we just bought the house in December so we are unsure of past dogs and if they had any medical issues. So until about mid may outdoors is off limits for walking. Like I said he's 8 weeks full akc yorkie right now he's little over 1lb :) |
Well congrats on ur new little member of ur family! I have an 8 week old too, so I'm having lots of training issues too. I'm just wondering if ur entire floor in the playpen was covered in the puppy pads? Just because I know that they don't like to go to the bathroom where they sleep. So idk how long he's in there but if he sleeps in there he prolly will wait until u let him out. Just keep being consistent w/him.. There are lots of training videos online to help u out as well. And 8 weeks is still very young. My little girl doesn't understand anything I'm saying to her about her going potty. So just keep telling him & when he does good..lots of praises and treats, good luck :) |
Welcome to Yorkietalk! I didn't have luck with Rosie and puppy pads. I wouldn't worry about the treats. If he is only 8 weeks old it may be best not to give him treats. Maybe someone can give you more info on that as I got both my girls older than that. |
Stella and chewys chicken dinner is very small bits are like crack for my .jpeg. I thought the Same thing about treats until I came across these. I reward him almost every time he goes on his pee pad. I this this helps as he rarely has accidents. .jpeg is now 14 weeks (tomorrow) |
My puppy Cupcake is 16 weeks and is puppy pad trained. As soon as I got him I started encouraging him to use the pad. I got a very nice pad holder from Amazon and placed it in the kitchen. The kitchen was gated off and when he was down I watched him every sec. When he looked like he was looking for a spot to relieve himself, I quickly put him on the pad. When he went I used a clicker (I have been working on clicker training, works great) and followed it with a treat and lots of praise. He caught on very quickly. In his pen he only has room for his bed and a pad. He uses it as well. Just be patient and consistent he will get it. ;) |
