tether didnt work....UTI the culprit?
 
one question...2 year old yorkie...we're starting back to square one to try to get the belly band off of him and i have been using the tethering method...

however, it didnt quite work because he still caught me with my back almost turned and hiked his leg...i stopped him mid stream grabbed the nearest treat i could find LOL (a cheerio) and took him outside as fast as i could...where he continued to finish going and i gave him the cheerio...i know not the most reinforcing treat in the world but...still a treat!

i cleaned the mess up with soap and water then put vinegar over that but...

is it normal for a dog to be tethered to a person and still just go pee? or is it possible that his UTI could be the culprit? he had drank a ton of water after i got home from work and it did happen about 30 mins after which i just now realize i got sidetracked and after having a large drink i should've let him out to potty............it's a MILD uti....or so says the vet...but still probably bothering him.

If he has a UTI then yes, I believe it could be the culprit. When they have a UTI, they feel pressure to potty and if they have anything in them, they will have to go. Does your pup have a UTI? I didn't realize that. That makes it more difficult to potty train but it's best if you keep doing what you're doing. He will get it. Is he on medicine for the UTI? If so, it starts helping within a week. At least that's how it happened with Princess Sophie. Don't loose heart, it's gonna happen.

yep he was diagnosed with a mild UTI yesterday and we're on meds...for 10 days

i don't want to limit his water beyond what the healthy requirement is especially with him having a UTI he needs to clean out his system so is it true the recommended feeding of water is 1-1.5 oz for every pound? so if he's 5.5 lbs should i be ok with just giving him half a cup of water in the morning and half a cup at night? for total of 8oz per day?

i want to limit his water intake to aid with housebreaking but not beyond the healthy requirement for what his body needs

When dealing with an UTI i personally would not limit water during this time. Part of the healing process of UTI's at least in humans is to drink lots and lots of water and to urinate lots and lots!

understandably so...what about after the medication is complete and his UTI is better?

Let's see if some of the other more experienced yorkie owners pipe up. I have always been under the assumption that a person leaves fresh water 24/7 for the dogs so that is what I do.

Yes! Your pup must have access to water at all times. At bedtime if Sophie needed to get up to potty, we always went for a drink before going back to bed. That was the only way we knew she was getting enough water. There also were times I would put drops of water on her nose to entice her to drink. It worked and she is all better now!
