Sit Stay Look ... Training questions At what age did you begin training? What techniques would you pass on? Did you use treats? If so what kind. Any tips I am sure my little .jpeg will appreciate. Thanks! Kera |
As a trainer we start training as early as 10 weeks. My puppy was about 12 wks when she started and she excelled quickly. Yorkies are very intelligent yet stubborn breeds. But when you start at a young age they learn quicker. Just like a child learns faster than adult, so does a puppy. But that doesn't mean older dogs and adult humans can't learn. Where I train we use rewards every time, reward does not always mean a treat. That can include praise, play, attention and treats, or anything else your dog enjoys. If you use treats always make sure they are small and can me eaten quickly. Time taken to chew can distract them from what they are learning. Remember does don't know english, so body language is the best way to train. |
I started mine at 16 wks using clicker training. My trainer taught me how to use hand signals and that seems to work better than words, although I use both words and signals simultaneously. If i say a command, they do not respond as well, but if I use hand signals without words, they respond quickly. I use Zukes training treats and Nature's Recipe training treats. Both are small and soft and I break those into smaller pieces as well. |
Im not a dog trainer or anything but I've had tremendous success with training my four pups who are now 10, 8, 6 and 3. You are welcome to look and hopefully find something that work s for you and your pup. The link in below in my signature. |
I say start training as early as possible. Even before the pup has left his mom, mommy is training already. At first I think it's easier to use treats, esp if the pup hasn't gotten to know or trust you entirely yet. Food is usually a good motivator. But use hand and voice commands, lead the nose with the treat and the body will follow. Be careful not to give too many treats though, with yorkie puppies being so tiny, you don't want to fill up their bellies with treats, then meal time will be difficult. I trained with regular kibble at mealtimes and it worked well for Uni and also my fosters. They will be hungry so will be willing to listen for the food. Uni didn't get a "treat" treat until she was probably 2 yrs old. Uni now knows all her commands by voice only, or hand only. She also knows several commands in Viet. |

1st, love, love, love the name .jpeg! Very creative. I don't have specific tips just needed to say how impressed I am with how smart the breed is. Only had my guy for 5wks. While I was whining about potty issues, someone mentioned their obedience training accomplishments. Oops! I had totally forgoten about that. Well, yesterday I started at mealtime using kibble. Mr. Peebody learned "turn around" in like 2 minutes. This evening (his 3rd training session) he finally got "sit", and is improving on "up". His third day home, I could tell he understood the pee pad concept. Super smart. I've never been a fan of super smart dogs, I'm too lazy. Don't want to have to out-think my dog. Usually prefer cute, dumb and cuddly. BUT, I am looking forward to discovering all the things Mozzi can master! He already seems to be mastering me quicker than I'm mastering him. Look out folks!:D |
If the dog is 10 weeks old or older and it has been in its new home about two weeks with no ongoing problems, it is time to start simple, basic training. If it is ill or has ongoing tummy troubles or anything from leaving its pack and settling into a new home, wait until things seem normalized for about two weeks. Don't expect miracles or anything with the babies as they have very short attention spans and under-developed memory centers and major in forgetting things but short, repetitive, positive-reward sessions will eventually get you where you want to be with your puppy. |

Thank you everyone. I was waiting a little to give him time to get adjusted. He has been with us for one week ... So I will be starting tomorrow. He has been picking up potty pad training. ~Kera |
