Obedience Training Classes I signed Bella up for training classes at PETSMART...have anyone ever took the classes? Im worried Bella not even going to act right...She is 1 yrs old. The trainer told me that they are going to teach her to come sit and stay among other things Im excited...to see how everything turn out...Anyone ever did the training? Did your pup learn anything? |
Hehe... if they acted right they wouldn't need training classes... JK. We didn't do Petsmart but yes in class mine learned a lot! |
I just home-schooled my Tibbe but when I got him he had spent 9 mos. in a cage, was wild and almost feral and is now a very well-behaved little feisty toot and loves his obedience training more than just anything. Oh, he loves to work doing his little obedience tricks. It's his favorite thing to do - that and his little jury-rigged agility course we do in the den. Dogs just LOVE training and working. And you love how they get into it and are so proud of them. Just don't let the trainer talk you into using a collar or do anything you feel isn't right for your little Yorkie. Most trainers these days use only positive reinforcement training methods and I imagine a large company wouldn't hire one of the old-fashioned, hard-nosed, aversives-technique kind so there shouldn't be too much to worry about except if the trainer is young. If that is the case, likely they haven't had too much experience around dogfights and breaking them up, etc., so if there is a big dog in the class, keep your little dog away from it just to be on the safe side. |

We did the Petsmart training classes. My experience was a pleasant one, but I have taken several other classes with different dogs over the years, so I am somewhat familiar with basic training. The Petsmart class helped with socialization and basic commands. Please take the advise of yorkie people here. Use only a harness for training or any other time you have your pup on a leash. It is very important. Do not let any trainer tell you differently. YT people know! Have fun! |
I hope your classes go well. We started our little girl with Puppy Training at our local Petsmart and were blessed with a WONDERFUL trainer. She keeps dogs in each of her classes the same size so we had all small dogs. Stressed the importance of using a harness and NOT a collar due to trachea injuries. Hope LOVES going to her classes, graduated and has started the intermediate classes now. Due your homework. Not all Petsmarts are the same but we did have a good experience! |

You have gotten some great advice here, Alisha! Don't worry about how Bella behaves...she will be just fine! She is such a cutie pie. :) One thing I learned about classes is that they teach the owner more than the pups...and it is up to the owner to listen, learn and work with their pup. My Molly is almost 6 months old and I have had her for 2 months. She weighs only 2.6 lbs and is in her puppy classes at Petsmart. She is doing great with it. I find that during class there is too many distractions for her to really pay attention but she does well at home with less going on. I do have a question for all of you though. She has a bad habit of biting at our feet and pulling on the bottoms of our pant legs. She also believes our hands are her biting toys. I have tried redirecting her to chew toys, telling her no and timeouts but nothing is working. Any advice would be appreciated. |
