She's Tethered!!

Hi Everyone! I just thought I would let everyone know that I do not know everything. As if you didn't already know. LOL

As of today Princess Sophie is tethered. We have given up trying to keep track of her in the den. Just too many things to hide under and behind. LOL She is one sneaky Princess! Of course, she doesn't like it and is struggling against it every so often. I actually think the tether is for the DH and I. It actually makes us pay more attention to her. We thought she was getting all of our attention but obviously not. I believe the experts (those of you who have suggested this to others) are correct in this treatment. I will be posting as time goes by to let y'all know how things are going but right now DH and I are in the Dog House!!:(

rubynrosie 03-10-2013 02:17 PM

We told you she would quickly tether...oops I mean wrap you around her paw!

Verbena 03-10-2013 02:31 PM

LOL . . . I am working with Galen. He keeps chewing the leash

richards6402 03-11-2013 07:35 AM

Hang in there Diane. I don't want to discourage you but it took Macy almost a year before I trusted her out of my sight. Molly has taken to using her potty pad like a champ so each dog is different. I know Princess Sophie has it in her so keep up the good work and don't get discouraged.

Thanks Karen! I appreciate the words of encouragement! I have convinced my DH that if he wants her completely potty trained then this is the best way to do it. This way we can praise, praise, praise her for every success and avoid accidents. I think we are both together on this so that makes it a bit easier. For us anyway! LOL

Wallee 03-11-2013 09:22 AM

I'll be rooting for you Diane. I think training Wallee was one of the toughest for me as well. We had a little confusion with seasons changing and him going both outside and then coming in and peeing on my carpet. Luckily, he picked a favourite spot every time to pee on the carpet no matter how often he went outside so I ended up putting his pad there. It wasnt my favourite place to have it as it was in the living room. I tried moving it to the door and putting something over that spot during Christmas but the sneaky brat started going beside the dining room table. So, after numerous steam cleaning adventures, I decided to put 2 pads over that area and if he is running and playing, he will go there. I still put him outside when he wakes from sleeping and when we come in from being out. (Weirdly enough we have let him stay in the living room when we are out but he doesn't go pee till we get home)
He will be 1 on the 27th and "in our home" I feel we wre now safe with him going outside or if we are not watching, he will just use the pads. Hopefully when summer comes, we will try more outside and less pads....babysteps.;)

Tethering is a great way to keep your little princess out of trouble and safe. It's to easy to get distracted and loose track of them when they are this small. Believe me it works and you'll feel better knowing that she is safe because you know exactly where she is at all times. It takes up to a year before they can be left alone and be trusted not to chew, poo and pee what and where they shouldn't .

CLAP CLAP, I am so glad you are trying tethering. It is one of our most successful training techniques. Some (clients) people don't like it because they want us to teach the pup in one visit, to be house broken. Tethering puts the responsibility where it belongs on the teacher ! Puppies are not accountable until the are completely trained. Repetition is key to training a puppy.
Please let us know how it goes. Hugs

I keep Lacey tethered when she's out of her crate. I also spend the greater part of my evening unwrapping the leash from around the chair legs, coffee table and anything else she can get wrapped around. It has helped tremendously with potty training though. I have two cats who have decided they like the bedroom better since Lacey has appeared on the scene. Lacey knows where they are but the leash stops right at the bedroom door. Saturday night she managed to bite the hook on the leash just right and got unleashed. I was in the kitchen. When I came back to the living room, she had gone into the bedroom where the cats are and one by one, removed their toys and added them to her pile in the living room. The cats just sat on the bed and watched.

Thats so funny... she was claiming them as her own! :D

That's hysterical!! Princess Sophie just wants to chase Hansel around the house. She has also learned to climb stairs but she doesn't know how to get down. LOL We have a pretty tall staircase to the 2nd floor so if she get up there unaided, she whines till we can bring her down. LOL

What things they get into!!! This is turning out to be a really fun adventure with these pups!!

Teresiana 03-12-2013 09:08 PM

I tethered both of mine to my belt loop the second they walked in the door. My boy stayed at my hip for months. It was tough. My girl was a lot easier. I actually miss it sometimes. I kinda think that it helped us bond a little. Then again, they both still follow me EVERYWHERE. Maybe that's why they do that? I just put that together as I was writing this. Hmmm...?? But I think that Yorkies are like Velcro anyway, right?

Good luck :) You guys will do great!

Verbena 03-13-2013 04:51 AM

I am happy you are trying tethering. I hope you have great luck with it

Verbena 03-13-2013 04:52 AM

How do you get them from biting the leash? Bitter apple ?

That is too cute. Galen does it too. But he grabs the cat toys and zooms around the livingroom with them and then wants to chew on them

Ldyrev1 03-13-2013 06:05 AM

I feel for you and Galen! Princess Sophie doesn't seem to mind being tethered. I think she's actually learning to walk with a leash by doing this. She just trots alongside me as I move from room to room. I do not tether her when she's in her playpen. She does however have some free time in the evening as that is the time of day when she runs laps around the den. It's pretty funny to watch. She kind of creates her own race track, around the hassock, the Cloud 9, my embroidery stand, and in and out of the big bed under the end table and in and out of her playpen. She's a hoot to watch. We only allow this after she has done all of her business so as to avoid mistakes. I think this will work for us, now all I have to do is stay on top of it. LOL I figure if she "goes" somewhere she shouldn't, it's my fault not hers. LOL

Tethering means they are attached to you and learn to follow you. I don't think it safe to do it any other way for risk of being strangled on something... it only takes a second, one time.

So glad it's working out well for you. Sounds like she has an excellent home and great parents!:D

We're doing all we can to help her be successful. She is such a joy and bright light in our lives. We want to keep her happy, she deserves it!!

You are such a great mommy to Sophie! :cheer:

Ldyrev1 03-13-2013 05:06 PM

It appears that she's got the #1 down pretty good. We haven't had any of those accidents in quite a while. When she's confined to the den she will stop whatever she's doing, dart into her play pen and go #1. I'm so proud of her. It's #2 that we are having difficulty with. We always praise her and give her treats when she does #2 on the pad, in the playpen or bathroom (next door) but if she's not tethered, she will find a spot behind the sofa and let loose. That's what we are really tethering her for right now. I really think it's just a matter of time and she will have it all figured out but for right now, we're working on rewarding success.

MishyMish 03-13-2013 11:07 PM

I just want to clarify... Are you tethering because you are taking her outside or to prevent accidents? I am confused as to whether you are using pads or not.

We are using pads in the house right now. Princess Sophie is 14 weeks old and so we are potty training. She's tethered to me so when I see her sniffing around or it's time for her to potty, I can know exactly where she is, take her to her pad and celebrate successes. It's working really well. In fact, this morning after she potty'd both kinds (LOL) we went to play in the den together and she made a bee line to her pad in her playpen and did #2 again on the pad. When it's just she and I in the den, I let her have some free time (untethered) to play and run around but only if she has potty'd. Guess she had some extra this morning. LOL

I hope this makes sense.

The only other bit of advice I can offer is to make the 'Good Potty Celebration' extra special, so she looks at you like maybe you have gone off your rocker... I had to do that with my Sapphire, and I could see the expression change on her face from being a 'Good Girl' to 'Wow, that really made Mom happy!'

Thanks!! That sounds like a great idea. We will do it!!!

iadubber 03-14-2013 08:22 AM

what are you using to tether? I went to petco and there wasn't much there. I was thinking of just getting some thin rope and clips tied to the end. thx

We just use a regular length leash and harness. Of course it's pink to match all her other things! LOL I'll post a pict.
