washable potty pads I like the idea of washable potty but am worried that the puppy ( I'll be getting him in April) won't be able to tell the difference between the pad and my wall to wall carpeting. What do you all think? |
I don't know but am bumping thread for others to give you their input! Good luck and congrats! |
My only advice would be to think about disposable. Mine was trained on washable and I have to say it got so that i was doig more of her laundry then my kids. She would only use it once (I didnt want pee there anyways) so I was washing a load of them every day. I had to start retraining her by putting a disposable on top of the washable and eventually she got it. I still keep a washable under the disposables (sometimes she pees alot) so nothing soaks through and only have to wash one a couple times a week. They have little things you can put the pads in so she gets use to that. |
Here is what I use with my Maltese since they were puppies. Didn't want to use disposable unless we are out of town. I wanted something that did not leak through and that only requires me to wash once a day. So one day when I was washing dishes I looked at my drying dish mat and  Why didn't I think of it sooner! Use my dish washing drying mat. When they pee on it, it absorbs and drys up so no messy wet feet like the grass pad stuff. The scent of urine and poo still on there so it does not confuse them during training. I do put a plastic dish washing mat/rack under the mat so no scent is left on floor. A good size you can get is the one at Bed bath and beyond. They have a small size and a large size. I bought four to rotate. At night when they are asleep I wash them by hand with gloves, bleach, and soap for 5 mins or so until no more smell and urine gone. Pop it in the dryer for a few mins, less then 10 since those drying mats dry quickly. I just started training my new no name yorkie and so far so good. But since lazy has kick in with washing once a day I have started to train my maltese to use the cat litter hehe. |
I made a bunch of washable ones when my baby was little. He absolutely would not go on one. He would walk 2 steps away from it and pee on my carpet :( |
I use disposable for Tatiana. She is doing fantastic with potty training! She even goes in on her own quite a bit. I found a bunch at Walmart in there clearance isle and stocked up on them. |
Used those but if you didn't wash and change often you have an odor problem. Disposable is probably the best bet |
Even if you use a disposable, they will have a hard time differentiating from a carpet, rug or potty pad. Before we moved, we had carpeting only upstairs & they made potty mistakes & I had to remove all rugs. Had to professionally steam clean the carpet every 6 months bc the stain kept coming back. Now we live in a condo & put in laminate flooring throughout (still no rugs loll!). They've made no potty mistakes, but mine are all grown up & they do prefer to go outside. We use washables over disposable pee pads, I like the added protection. I get all our potty supplies from Ryan, he has the best prices & has the fastest shipping!: Use Washable Pee Pads to Help with the Process of Puppy Potty Training |

I keep the washables in a garbage bag & wash 4-6 pads every other day. I have 4 fur butts, so disposals will be too expensive for me & I don't like the idea of creating so much waste. I only take them out once a day after their dinner, so they do use it during the day. We don't live in a very walkable area, the streets are messy & hilly, some streets don't even have an area to walk on. So I take them out in my car to a more walkable area or a near by park. Walking w/in the community here is a mess too, they end up w/black feet! IDk why...sigh I can't wait to move! |

In my last house, I had hardwood on the mainfloor (with lots of area rugs) and carpet upstairs and carpet in the basement. My last yorkie, Chelsea, never had pottying accidents. She knew her potty area was in the laundry room and no matter where she was in the house, she'd go to the laundry room if she had to go potty. Now... new house, new yorkie...but I used the same philosophy. I designated a potty area and stuck to it. (I did move it slightly, from the edge of a room right next to the hallway, to right in the hallway, but I did so gradually, by sliding the pads a couple of inches every few days). My current home is now a ranch-style, and once again I have hardwood throughout the entire first floor (other than marble in the bathroom), so I have alot of area rugs, both small & room-size, and ZoE knows to go to the hallway to go potty. |
