Free-Feeding Dry from Scheduled Feeding Wet Hello, I believe I may have put a thread of mine in the wrong section as I am getting the wrong type of responses! Anyways, my question is how can I transition my 4-year old yorkie from scheduled wet food eating to a "free feeding" kibble only diet? Hes been eating cesar his entire life. Some nights he gets boiled chicken instead. He will eat kibble sometimes late at night on his own. Only concerns of mine are that if he doesn't eat for very long, he could throw up yellow acid/liquid. Is this ok for a few times in an effort to get him to eat on his own? Main question...how to transition him to free-feeding. Thanks! |
hello and welcome to YT. I would first start mixing the food on a schedule feeding. Then once you transition him to the dry then I would just leave it out all day. Good luck |

Thank you for the replies and all. Hes been eating very well with a mixed meal of cesar/kibble. About 2 little spoons of kibble and 1/4 can of cesar. Im guessing the next step is to continue tweaking the ratio until its all kibble? Thanks |
Kibble Great news that he is now eating well with the mixture of wet food and kibble. You are right in slowly reducing the wet until it is, hopefully, all kibble. Lets hope he goes with the flow and will go to totally kibble. A popular additive here for picky eaters is a very small pinch of Parmesan cheese onto kibble, and this would not go bad when left out all day. Has the bile throw up stopped now that he is eating regularly? |
It sounds like you need a new kibble, one he likes to eat. I would keep weaning him off the wet food. My 5 year old Peanut would hardly eat dry food, it would take him about a day ½ to eat ¼ of a cup. I never gave him wet. Now with the food he is on he will eat ¼ daily. |
The bile throwup is pretty sporadic and is definitely not a regular thing. It is only after he doesnt eat which is probably once every 1-2 months. Thanks, Ill keep you updated |
