Pee pad training question. Hi, So my pup dozer is 9 weeks old, and we are working on pee pad training..now he is not to bad at peeing on the pad, 50/50 haha but when it comes to pooing we have issues...when I catch him about to pee I move him to pee pad right away and he goes or he walks over there himself...but when it comes to pooing he refuses to go on th pad...I will pick him up in the middle of him doing his business and put him on the pad and he won't stay on it and will walk to another spot and finish his business...I can't take him out yet because he still needs t get 2 more rounds of shots...so what is a good method for this...we live on an acreage where other dogs have been known to wonder into the yard and I doubt they are vaccinated so I wasn't sure if I should be putting him outside yet... |
How about putting something, like a playpen, around the pads so he can't wander off? As a puppy, I kept ZoE in playpen with a potty pads & a bed. I didn't take her out of there to play until right after she'd pottied, so I knew I was good for a little while. Every time she went pee or poop on her pad, I praised her like crazy and gave her a yummy treat (usually a small piece of cooked chicken). She very quickly learned that to get the treat, she had to potty on the pad. After a couple of weeks, I opened one side of the pen, while keeping her confined to a single room in the house. If she pottied outside the pad area, I firmly said NO and put her on the pad and she got no treat. She soon learned that the only way she'd get a treat was if she pottied on her pad. Luckily, she was highly food driven and loved her treats! She's now two years old, and will go potty on her pads (in the hallway) and come and tell me (by barking & kicking her legs back) that she went potty. She follows me as I go look to check, and then she quickly runs to the kitchen & sits waiting for her treat. It works for us, and she doesn't go potty anywhere else in my house, so I'm good with treating for potty, for life :) |
Are you crate training and feeding at specific times during the day (not just leaving the bowl out)? If you are, that makes it easier to know when he is going to go. When you wake up or come back from work or errands, take him out of the crate and put him right down on the pad. Wait patiently, and if he walks off, just pick him back up and put him back on the pad. He should go pee at least and probably poo a few minutes after. A few times of doing this will reinforce the habit and start his pad training more reliably. Also, try and keep relatively clean pads down so they don't think they are too dirty to go on. My Maddie likes her pads clean so I wash them very regularly. |
