HELP!! Pee Pad Problems! Sophie is now 4 months old. She has an xpen to stay in at night or while we are gone. Every morning when we get up her pad is chewed to pieces (it literally looks like it has snowed). We have tried the bitter spray, she leaves it alone for a couple hours but then chews it up. I also bought a small hand towel from Wal-Mart for her to play with (along with numerous other toys). It worked for a couple days and then she started peeing on the towel. I'm going to buy the tray that holds the pad this evening.. but I'm not sure if it will really work. I also do not want to resort to the washable pee pads (my husband is not a fan). I just need help!! I get so frustrated with her! Are there any other options? |
Hi and welcome to YT. I think if you don't want to try the washable ones that the tray might work since it will prevent her from getting at the pad. Buster chewed his for a bit but he out grew it. I have also heard of doggie litter boxes that you might want to look into. |
Hi there. :) Just curious - why is your hubby not a fan of washables? Is it because he's a little weirded out by the though of washing pee/poo pads in the same washing machine that the family uses? 'Cause I must say, I'm a little freaked out about that too. But I'm doing it anyway. (One of the benefits of being single, I suppose. ha) |
1 Attachment(s) My husband just doesn't like the idea of using our new washing machine (3 weeks old) on the dogs pee pads.. lol I bought the tray last night. While it worked overnight, this morning I changed the pad and went to the bathroom for about 20 minutes to finish getting ready. When I came back to the kitchen this was the result.. (I'm attaching a photo of the result of the pad/tray). |
It's my opinion that you should be crate training your pup at night when you're all in bed. It's best for a puppy to learn that bed time is down time. Dealing with xpen and washables should be an entirely different issue. Bedtime is when you go to sleep you put your pup in a small crate (no longer than the length of her body as she lies down and stretches out). This will ensure that she has no room to eliminate. You may not like this part but...(I feel it's like having a new born human as well), twice during the evening you'll need to put the pup out or to the pee pad (somewhere NOT IN THE SAME ROOM, hopefully near a patio door, garage or even deck). This is called potty training. If you leave the dog in an xpen all day and night it will feel like the same place to her and she'll have the same habits and behaviors. She needs to have a clean bed to sleep in and a cozy one at that. She might even cry for a few nights, but she'll get used to it. As long as she's in the same room as you and can see you she'll settle. I have my lil boy (2 1/2 pounds, 1 years old) in a crate on a chair that has arms that wrap all around it. He's eye level to me when I'm on my bed. He can see me very well and is very happy that he can. Just a suggestion... Our babies just want to be WITH US all the time especially at night time. If they can't be in our arms sleeping next to our warmth then the next best thing is a small hot water bottle with a wool sock around it and a good solid view of YOU. You can also try putting a ticking watching inside a toy (sew it up well) so he can hear "a heart beat". They were never meant to be solitary animals...they're PACKING animals. |
I appreciate the reply.. We HAVE tried the crate. She still uses the bathroom in it.. That is why we bought the pen. We were having to take her bedding out every day and wash it because it was covered in urine. I'm aware of what potty training is.. we take her out while we are home to use the bathroom instead of relying on the pads. |
I have a chewer. I'd come home & it looked like it snowed all over my house :( My husband is weirded out by the washable pee pads too. But I'm the alpha in that relationship. LOL :p After all, I am the one vacuuming up the mess & I am the one who does the laundry. The washable pee pads saved HOURS from day. Plus, they look sooo much better! I rinse them in a bucket & soak them in unscented detergent and warm water before I put them in the washer. I suppose you could use that washing machine cleaner after you wash them if it would make your husband feel better. I tried pad holders & the litterbox thing with grass. But the washable pads were the only thing that worked. I didn't have the patience to wait for my pup to outgrow the chew stage. The washable pads are more maintenance than just throwing a pad into the garbage or a diaper genie. But for the looks alone, I wouldn't go back to disposables. Good luck! |
Also...I got A LOT of chewy toys for my pup while I was transitioning her to the washable pads. I also put treats or kibble in those little balls & got her other interactive puzzle toys hoping to distract her from chewing the pad. It worked! So maybe she was a little bored & once she found that she could play with something that would reward her with a treat, she didn't think the pad was as much fun. |

Perhaps a good idea to prevent making a mess and chewing everything up... Take the pup for a little walk before you leave. Tire her out... lol |
Well, I think before long I will have my say and we will switch to washable pads. He is the one that has to clean it more than me but I will be the one doing the laundry so he wouldn't have to deal with it. I'm going to look into the toys that you can put a treat in or peanut butter so it can keep her a little more occupied. We have bought about 6 or 7 toys for her to play with but apparently a pee pad is more intriguing. Speaking of washables: How often do you wash them though? And how many do you have? |
