Training Classes I am interested in other's opinion about signing up for obedience training or even having a private session. Is it worth the money or is it better to buy a book on dog training and do it yourself? We will be getting a 12 week old yorkie male puppy next week and I want to teach it right from the gecko. I am not looking at anything crazy but just simple commands, not to pull on the leash, not to ASK for human food when you are eating, and to understand that he is not the Alpha-Male in the house. This will be a pet dog and not a show dog. Thanks, P.S. Should be get health insurance for the dog? |
First welcome and congrats on your new addition. Generally training does not start until about 2 weeks after all of the puppy shots are complete because you don't want your pup around other dogs until they are immunized. I think puppy classes (most required that your pup be a certain age) should be with other dogs so they become socialized and learn to co-exist without aggression. Just be sure that whatever class you take that they understand that you must use a harness, not a collar. Some trainers who don't really know small dogs don't get that. AND, rough training is absolutely inappropriate and if you see that in your trainer leave. Yorkies respond to positive behaviors! Good luck and enjoy! |
The health insurance question has diverse answers. I have Healthy Paws for my Cali, but many have credit cards and savings account. Just understand that a serious illness can be $5000, And are you prepared for that . There are a number of thread here on YT where it is discussed. Check on those. |
