Crate question J slept in his crate for the first time last night. He was a bit upset to start with but with some firm instruction he went to sleep. He woke us up about an hour in to be taken out (he wouldn't poo outside before bed no matter how long we stayed out -I think he gets too tired) so I'm thankful he lets us know! I move the crate into the living room during the day and have the door open, he is in and out with his teddy and has fallen asleep in there once (with the door open). I've popped him in there when I nip to the loo and he whimpers at first but quietens down when I stay 'stop' firmly. Then he bites at his teddy until I come back and I give him a treat and let him out. Am I doing this right? Are there any bad elements to this because if so I really want to cut them out now. It feels natural and fluid to us but I feel we must get the way we do things clear and set from the start. Also at night I put a cover over the crate which seemed to help him but I haven't pulled it round during the day. Should it always be a case of pulling the cover down when he is in there or should I just let him get on with it and only put the cover down at night?:aimeeyork |
What you are doing sounds pretty good to me! =) You are making him comfortable with his kennel and with being in it. You don't need to give a treat every time you remove him from him kennel, but do continue to praise him for his good behavior in it every time. As for the cover, I only put the cover down when I want Blazer to sleep- such as at night. During the day, for quick rests in his kennel if I need to run out for a short time I don't put it down. I'm so glad that this is working out for you now! =) |
Thanks AF. He actually seems to like it so far which makes me thrilled. The crate is far too big (husband bought it and seems to think everything is as large as him) so we have fenced a portion off as we want make sure he soils outside. |
3 of the people that I know with Yorkies have crates that are WAY too big for the, too! LOL! Maybe they just couldn't find a smaller one when they needed it? Blocking off a portion is perfect- they only need enough room to stand up and turn around comfortably. How is the potty training going? |

The wee is more difficult to catch (we take him out as soon as he drinks, when he has been excited and when he wakes up - oh and about every 2 hours otherwise!) and he seems to favour our kitchen which is as far from outside as you can get in our flat. We'll get there! |
Yes you will get there. Eventually. =) These stubborn little pups sure have a mind of their own! Keep up the good work- patience, persistence, and love will get you through this! =) |
