Collar or harness for pup?
 
We have a tiny little pup aged 9 weeks. Obviously we're not taking him out for walks just yet but we are letting him onto our patio for toilet training.

I've bought him a harness in order to get him used to the idea of one so he is ready for little walks after his second injection in a few weeks time. The thing is the harness, which was the smallest we could find anywhere, is far too big for him by quite some stretch and I imagine it will be for a while.

We found some collars which would probably fit without leaving room for his feet to trapped or anything but I was wondering if he is too little for collars or if collars were right for Yorkies at all. Will he fuss or get upset by one? He let us out the harness on him but obviously because it was so big we took it off fairly soon lest he hurt himself. He does like to sit and smell it though.

for walking it is always best to use a harness.. yorkies have a very delicate trachea and can be damaged easily by wearing a collar for taking walks.
if you cannot find a harness small enough try looking in the cat isle at the pet store , they make little step in harness for cats.. also a ferret harness would probably work as well

I have always heard to never use collars due to pontential for tracheal collapse. I found some cloth and velcro body harnesses when Huey was tiny that worked ok, and as he got bigger I got him the strappy ones. The rare occasion Huey has had his leash attached to a collar, if he pulls, he coughs and acts like he is choking to death, so I recommend harness only.

I have bought ferret harnesses for my tiny little babies...they work well. They even have tiny little mesh vests for ferrets, that are harnesses....these work super for our little babies.

Walking my 7 month
 
I was told to take Thomas on structured walks. Well, I am. But my question is how much should I let him stop and sniff around. I realize he is just learning the real outdoors but not sure on how to manage the sniffing. He does wear a harness and my last little guy the and it worked great! Thanks

I am a firm believer in always, always walking on a harness. I keep Nilla in a Gooby harness, which are designed not to pull against the throat, but more the shoulders. Most small breed dogs have sensitive trachea areas, so it goes beyond the Yorkies too! If I get a collar, it is just an accessory for tags and whatnot, but most of the time I just put her in a Gooby harness or hoodie. Please use choose to always use a harness for your pup's sake! <3

That's exactly what I was going to suggest..we used to have ferrets..check ferret harnesses out. :thumbup:

I let them sniff as much as they want. It's how he learns to feel safe in the new environment and decide where "his spot" is :)

My dogs wear collars with ID tags at all times unless they are being bathed or groomed. But, for walks, we use harnesses.

Thank you all! We've bought him a ferret harness and he was quite happy to let us try it on him however he scratched at it a lot. I don't intend to keep him it in all the time because I may rub him but 2 mins of scratching made me so worried he would break his delicate pup skin.

Is it just a case of letting him wear it or a bit longer every day until he is ready to go for his walks? He will sit and paw and sniff it quite happily, should I allow him to do that or keep it totally away until it is time to try it on?

i think it is ok to leave it on him for a few minutes a day just till he gets used to it.. after you put the harness on him and he sits quietly give him a treat..
