introduction to crate Introducing Chorkie to the crate today for the first time. Got a puppy pad food water and toys in it. Any other ideas for success? |
Is this a crate for playing in (like an Xpen) or for sleeping/travel? If the latter than you dont' want a pee pad in there, you won't want him soiling in his crate. If it is more like an exercise pen then just make sure that there are no choking hazards with him and that he is far enough away from walls and corners so that he doesn't figure out a way to chew on them. |
It would be for sleep cause I need to keep him in there overnight |
If it is an expen type with a door, try to use the door and don't lift him out of it. This way he might not know to go up and over! Abby bangs on her door:) but has never attemped to climb out. |

Good look with the crate tonight. I'll be interested to hear how it goes because our 9 week old pup is trying his out for the first time tonight. I have it in the living room (although I intend for over night to be in our bedroom for a while) at the moment with the door open and toys in and around it. He has showed some interest but has yet to go in I have a feeling our crate may be too big, it is 24inches - I wonder if I can divide it off somehow? |
Ok the crate idea didn't work to well. Chorkie threw. A fit for most of the night |
He just needs more "practice." Try putting him in it during the day for a short while at a time (start with maybe 15 minutes and gradually go longer.) He'll fuss but ignore him until he is quiet, then go get him out and praise him and give him a small treat. Try to use the same word every time he goes in his crate- we use "kennel." Eventually you should be able to just say "kennel" and he'll go in by himself. Also, I cover Blazer's kennel with a blanket so that he knows it's sleep time. The darker space seems to calm him faster. Keep trying, it'll all work out! |
I am having a problem with crating our new pup at night as well. He usually whines for a couple of minutes then goes to sleep, but is up at 3 and 4 am wanting to go poop and potty. I take him out, but then he doesnt want to go back to sleep. As soon as I get back to sleep, he starts whining again. I am totally exhausted:confused:... He absolutely HATES to be in his crate or to be in any sort of confinment. He is 5 months old now. I have tried placing him back in the bed with me, but he is soo restless and keeps me awake. Plus, i dont want him thinking that he can just get in the bed if he whines. I want him potty trained first. Frustrated and exhausted mommy:aimeeyork |
