Free-range or feeding schedule? I free-range my furbabies, aka I keep their bowl filled and out all the time so they can eat whenever they get hungry. I've done this for every dog I've ever owned and haven't ever had any problems. I've met people though who swear you should only feed them at scheduled times. I was just wondering what everyone on here does. Do you keep the bowl down or do you feed your babies at specific times? Thoughts on each method? |
I think it's great if you free-feed and your dog is able to maintain a healthy weight and regulate their own intake (I know that a lot of dogs are able to do this!) But at the moment I prefer scheduled feedings. It helped us when Toki was a pup to anticipate when she'd need to potty and was necessary when we were trying to get her to lose weight. Also in the past I was doing 1 raw meal and kibble for the other so obviously you can't leave raw out. I do know that some people leave out kibble all the time and set out the one raw meal for breakfast/dinner so it's really up to your preference or any special needs your dog has. I am home and able to set out her meals at 7 AM and 6 PM but in the future if my job doesn't permit me to follow that schedule, I may try out free-feeding :) |
I had Colby on a feeding schedule because I wanted him on a poop schedule too. But I'm starting to get concerned that he's just not eating the amount he needs so I started free-feeding him. So far, he still seems to be on the same poop schedule! |
I started out feeding Blazer his full daily allowance all at one time in the morning. Once he started eating it all before noon I started to break up his daily allowance into 3 separate feedings, still maintaining only his daily allowance. I do not remove his bowl at any time so that he can eat any amount at any given time. My neighbor free feeds in the way that the dogs' bowl is always full. The Shorkie maintains a healthy weight/skinny. The Yorkie, however, is super fat! For her body size she should maybe be 4 or 5 pounds but I think that she is closer to 8 and it is ALL belly! (Extra not good because of her Luxating Patela.) So really, I think that it just depends on the dog and what works for both of you. |
When Joel was a puppy he was backwards, if I left it down he wouldn't eat all day, and when I scheduled his food he ate, lol |
