all of a sudden aggression  Hi I am new to Yorkie talk, and have been doing A LOT of reading. You have a wonderful amount of info on here, however, I have not come across an answer to my question. My 9 yr old yorkie male has all of a sudden gotten very aggressive with people. Whether its the pizza delivery man or someone wanting to say hi on a walk, he barks like he is going to kill, goes into a forward stance, and then goes after the person even if they never come toward him. I am afraid that he will bite someone someday and we will have to put him down. He evn scares me when he gets into this out of control type attitude. Any ideas??? |
Welcome! I would take him to the vet. Although I am not an expert, from what I have read in posts and such, it usually means something is wrong. Could be pain or a number of things. When they start to act out differently from their usual self, it's time to get them into the vet. Good luck, I do hope all is well!!!!! |
I do second that advice. It could be anything physical that is causing pain and creating a "nasty disposition". An infected gum line, tooth decay, uti, etc. Sudden behavioural changes usually signify a physical problem. But sometimes they are really not so sudden, but have slowly built up over time. It is just we dismissed this response or that response. The key is to rule out physical problems. Then to address the behavioural issues. There are some good training video links, posted in the Training forums. You could do a search for "dog aggression to ppl" |
If you can rule out physical issues it may be that he had a big scare and now needs a bit of retraining. He has to relearn that 1) he doesn't need to be your protector 2) that he will be ok around these "strangers" and 3) to do what you want him to do when someone comes to the door. Best of luck! |
