Food aggression? 12 weeks old Kiki is 12 weeks old and we had her since 8 weeks. I know it was too young but the breeder told as the incorrect age for her. Anyway- Kiki is now showing food aggression. She inhales her kibble and tries to eat everything in sight. She knows how to sit and we are practicing stay but is still so young. When she has a toy or a chew treat, especially the latter, she growls when we pet her or when we put our hand on it or try to take it away. Our other dogs never did this. When feeding her, I try to feed her from my hands and she does this well. Never bites and takes it gently. When kibble is in bowl on floor I put my hand in food and she is not that great with that. She gobbles it fast and tries to steal it or push my hand away. Now with "safe for puppies" chews or treats she growls and guards the item. She doesn't bite, but I want all this behaviour to stop. Here is what I'm trying: - continuing to pet her when she has treat -taking it away when she growls (when she gets said treat chew back guarding and growling is worse) - telling her "uh uh" which she knows I'm lost. Where I live there isn't dog training. :( help. |
First: Don't get frustrated and don't give up! Second: It sounds a little like you could afford to teach her who's boss when it comes to the edibles. With her food dish, make her sit before you serve her and see if she can go 20 seconds without a single movement. If she does, slowly put the food down. If she moves to get to it before it hits the ground, stand up, tell her to sit, and make her wait again. It may take her some time to get the hang of things, but the goal is to get her to see that you control the food. Simultaneously, you should still be trying to get her acclimated to having a hand in her food dish. Just take it slow. |
