I REALLY need help with this one...
 
Okay, I admit it... I am not perfect. Actually, when it came to house training my Yorkie, I was far from it! She was going to be 1 year old on Dec. 18, and was 50% trained. I just didn't know how to train her because she was alone for 8 hours of the day.
In a few months, I will be getting another Yorkie. Unfortunately for me, we are getting our house recarpeted at around the same time! That could be bad.
From 7-3, there is generally no one home. I know the basics about house training a dog- crates and confined areas, but I was always such a softy about confining my baby! (And she was such a well, BABY about it!)
But I can't let that happen this time, so what I am looking for are specifics. What times, how long, what to do when I am home and she is roaming, etc. REALLY, I have no objections to you being as specific as you can...

Usually 15~20 minutes after they eat or drink & when they wake up. Be consistant. Don't let them roam freely throught out the house until they are trained as they will be confused. But them in a x-pen or a small area first, giving them pee pee pads as a place to relieve themselves. Try to put enough down as that is all they are on. When you come home that should be your first task. Keep some pee pads in the area of the house they will be in and hopefully they will remember the pads and go to them until they have mastered the great outdoors. As they begin to use the pads move them closer and closer to the door until they are outside... :p

I have dealt with the same problem you have - I work. And - it's winter and cold here, so we don't go outside.

There is nothing I can do, but keep my puppy confined in the kitchen when I'm gone. I don't feel bad doing this. It's large and he has everything he needs - toys, a bed, food, water, and pee pads.

I purposely got a male - so that I can use the belly bands. If he's running around the house (which he is doing most of the time when I'm home), I slap a belly band on him. I check him often and if he hasn't pee'd, I take it off and take him to his pad. Sometimes he pees then and sometimes he doesn't.

We're doing the best we can. At least between his being in the kitchen when I'm gone and his wearing a belly band when he's running around the house - the carpet is safe.

Little girl dogs and diapers just don't work for me.

Unless you want your new carpet ruined, you're going to have to get over this! There is no reason why a small dog can't be contained in an uncarpeted area anytime that you aren't there to supervise.

If you can't bring yourself to do this, the only other options that I see are: 1) skip the new carpet or 2) use bellybands/diapers.

Actually, I live at home so it is my mother's carpet, and it is not my choice at all whether or not we get new carpet. Also, new carpet isn't the ONLY reason this dog can't pee in the house... it is just not okay to live in a bathroom! And I also agree that there is no reason I can't confine a small dog- which is why I said I can't do the same thing I did this time, as I did last. But thank you anyway for responding!

Does the kitchen have carpet, too?

Haha. No, and yes. Thank you to Snow Yorkies for the advice. I think I have my plan of action pretty well worked out. I would have stopped checking this thread days ago, but I can't resist when an email pops up in my in box, telling me there was a reply.
