Staying out of crate all night I was just wondering when it is safe to let your yorkie stay out of the crate all night long. He has been house broke since June 2012. Mind you, it took 2 1/2 years to get him trained reliably. The crate takes up much of my need space and I would just like to retire it. Any advice would be helpful. Thank for taking time to answer my question.:animal-pa |
If he is housebroken, I would let him stay out. My oldest yorkie, who's 4 yrs old has been trained for almost two yrs. now. I started off initially just giving him free roam of the house when I was not at home and after not seeing any accidents for about 2 wks, I then progressed to leaving him out at night. I put his bed beside mine and he's been sleeping there every night since then. |
If he's reliably housebroken, should go okay. Block him off from your special rooms, living room, etc., and see how he does overnight. If you get up and don't smell or see urine anywhere, keep doing this for a couple weeks and then slowly open another door to another room and so on over the next few nights. If he's peeing somewhere overnight, you should be able to smell it that next morning. |
I'd start slow. Leave the crate open for him to leave if he wants to and have a bed near it. Also, keep your door either closed or gated so he can't leave the room. Once he is sleeping out of the crate, in his bed (or other choice spot) and not leaving you any surprises in the morning then go ahead and open/ungate the door. Good luck! =D |
