HELP!!!! Whining + barking ALL DAY :(Sorry for the really long post but I wanted to explain the whole situation....so here it goes: In the morning I walk Maxi for 30 minutes, then I leave for work at 8am and I leave Maxi in his ex-pen with two kongs, a treat dispensing ball, and 3-4 toys. My roommate stays home until about 11am, but Maxi remains in his ex-pen. Then, a dog walker comes to play with Maxi from 3:30pm until4:30pm. Finally my husband gets home at 5:30pm, and I get home at 6pm. Maxi had been doing great with this separation. He would be entertained with the kongs for 15 minutes or so, and would whine/bark/howl for 5-10 minutes, and then sleep. He would wake up to play a few times, but wouldn’t whine at all for the rest of the day. Part of this success is because everyone in our house had been on the same page about ignoring him completely if he whines/barks/howls. Once he has stopped barking for about 5-10 seconds, then we would acknowledge him. Yesterday, Maxi was whining after I left and after about 5 minutes my roommate opened her door and told him to “shhh”, he was quiet and she said good boy! Then today, the same thing happened, he had been whining/barking for about 10 minutes, she opened the door again and said “shhh”.He was quiet while she was in the kitchen, but after she left he began whining again (which he never did before, he only whined when I left, never when she left), and he has been whining/barking since 11am and it’s now 2:30pm….. My question is, is his constant whining today because of the two days of her saying “shhhh”, or is there any other reason for it? I know that he is alone for a long time, but he had been doing great for over a month. I’m really worried, because we are going to be moving in two weeks and the lease at the new apartment says “barking will not be tolerated” and I would hate for neighbors to complain about him :( |
I think he's barking cause he knows someone is home and doesnt understand why he's by himself. Allie will do this if i go upstairs, where she is not allowed, but otherwise quiet after we leave the house. |

How old is he, allie would cry and bark when we left for the day but eventually out grew it. She eats her breakfast, potties then curls up in her bed, where im sure she sleeps until we get home. Thats tough when you have neighbors close. Would love to live in a townhouse/apt. but not possible, allie barks.. Alot! |

Awwww, he IS still a baby - but the reality is, what else can you do? You've covered all the bases - taking him out for a good walk before you leave, having a pet-sitter come in, etc....it's difficult isn't it - my son always used to say "It's a shame they can't read"....:D But they can watch tv or listen to the radio, I wonder if you've tried either of those? He might be a little bit lonely (I suppose another pup's out of the question?!!? ;)). We had a similar problem with Harry when he was tiny - what made it better for him and us, was when we able to trust him enough to have the run of the house. Not just pottying, but past the chewing stage (thinking of the wires!) - he was then able to look out of the front window at the passers-by, and out of the back at the squirrels. All barking and crying stopped then, he had more to occupy his mind, and we've never ever looked back. We took the plunge at about 10 months :) I hope you manage to sort this out, good luck! I used to leave the tv for Buddy whenever I had to leave for work. Blazer hasn't been left alone much at all yet but I notice at night that he'll watch tv every once in a while so I may have to leave one on for him when I leave him for a time. I don't trust him out alone yet (still potty accidents from time to time and still chewing on things he shouldn't every once in a while.) |

We REALLY want another puppy, but we are being responsible and making sure we are 100% ready for it so it'll probably take us another 5 months or so... how did you transition into giving him free run of the house? did you do it little by little, or one day you just let him loose? :doghop: maybe I'll try to make his play area bigger... Does Harry bark at the passer-bys or the squirrels? |

We made the transition quite gradually. He's a bit of a Harry Houdini, and actually learnt how to open his crate :eek: So then we thought - well, the kitchen's pretty dog-proof, let's give that a try! It worked pretty well for a month or so - then he must have caught a lucky leap on the handle and managed to open the kitchen door! :eek: He met me at the front door....I couldn't believe my eyes :D I don't know how long he'd been out and about, but there was no damage and no mess, so I thought "ok, let's just try him in the whole house". So from then on, I just shut the bedroom doors, and let him get on with it! I must stress, everything dangerous is either hidden or put away - and Harry was quite a bit older than your Littlie is now. As for passers-by - he barks at the one's he doesn't like the look of ;) - and he cries to get to the squirrels, but nothing too mental (I've checked with our neighbours, and they WOULD tell me!!!).
